I’d tell them, but I’d either go outside or somewhere somewhat secluded. The managing director was unprofessional telling a co-worker about it 2 hours before it happens.
You know her. Would you want her to tell you? Act accordingly, be a friend and a human being.
Take your friend out for drinks after work.
But on the flip side does telling her jeopardize your job? It’s easy to tell someone to do the “moral” thing with no consequences
Your director broke a big rule by telling you ahead of time. Ultimately the liability is on them, I’d pull them aside and tell them if you trust they won’t mention your name
OP do not get involved. Good intentions are not always received as such. Corporate situations are inhuman. And you have soft intel, you don't actually know what is going to happen in that meeting. Be there for her afterwards.
I’m sorry to hear about your friend. On a more positive note- can we please make Awkward Moment of the Day be a thing?
You should not have been placed in this situation by your director. That discussion comes after HR meets with your colleague, or perhaps simultaneously. What you do with the info is up to you at that point, unless you were sworn to secrecy
It’s not your place to tell the person. It doesn’t help them at all in the long run, and it can get you in trouble.
Get your director fired! 🤔😎
Agreed with Freelance ⬆️ it’s not your job to tell them. Them knowing now won’t change anything and they’ll be distressed until it happens. Buy them a drink after.
...colleague will be laid off "soon". Meanwhile, colleauge suddenly has important meeting with Managing Director at 430. What do I do for the 2 hrs? Tell her? Say nothing? Why didn't they tell her at the same time?
This has happened to me TWICE, for some reason I always hear about 2 weeks before someone is let go. It’s unsettling each time and I can’t decide whether I hate knowing ahead of time or I appreciate the heads up (from a workload perspective)
I’ve always been a weenie and never told the person. I
