Lol @d1 “doing pot"
Thanks everyone. To give more context, joined a new firm at the end of last year, and did well on the first project. Then my parent was diagnosed with cancer in June and my performance slipped and go let go in beginning of Oct. I was already having thoughts about the new firm even before the cancer/performance and was in the recruiting process couple of months before Oct. Any advice would be appreciated! But the silver lining is that dads lung cancer is stable and will start immunotherapy soon and helped me have a different perspective in life and I am ready to be a rockstar again!
If it was for cause, you might be screwed, if not I'd just explain honestly and hope they're decent about it
I’m surprised that even came up in a background check. Most companies will only release the dates of employment and title and won’t disclose how you left.
Just lie bro
A1 - Ha, I know. I am a complete square.
I figured out as a sophmore in college that I wanted to do cleared work and have been actively on the straight and narrow since. This full scope with poly has cost me a lot of fun over the years, but at least I'm doing the work I love.
Tell the truth, what you said above, minus the part about already being on the job market when you were let go
I’m shocked they would say you were let go if you weren’t fired for cause. Wow. Yes, just be honest and I don’t think you need to spin that.
If you weren’t put on a PIP or anything you really were just downsized. It sounds like an unfortunate collection of circumstances which happened around the time they were going to downsize anyways. Good luck with the new role and I’ll pray for dads continued health.
Is there an HR org that will release anything other than dates of employment? We are told of massive ramifications for even giving references.
The recruiter don’t need anyone to tell them how you got let go, they can pretty much put the pieces together to get a hunch...but getting let isn’t a big deal I think it’s probably going to happen to everyone at some point in their career...I wouldn’t volunteer that I was let go, regardless of the situation hat occurred. I’d stick to your story and dont deviate...
I got let go, but I was going through a huge family situation. I never lied but didn’t disclose willingly.
Only if you lied. Unless you've done something nuts (did you kill a man in Vegas?) or something more mundane but recent (PLEASE tell me you haven't been doing pot or downloading music illegally since you were a teenager) they pretty much care only if you lie to them.
If you didn't tell the investigator, call him back now. Like, right now. That particular lie is particularly easy to disprove. Say you were crazy embarrassed, but fess up but you understand the weight of responsibility of a clearance and why this investigation matters.
Say it was an amicable decision to leave because you were dealing with family issues.
Was this your most recent position? Whether it was or not will impact my guidance back to you.
Not fired for cause and I did not kill anyone;)
I wouldn’t lie, OP, because form personal experience that’s what bothers us more. But you don’t have to disclose all the details either. You could just say it was a mutual decision - it wasn’t a good fit for me.
As C1 said, am surprised that they would release the reasons - generally we do just confirm employment and title; that’s it.
Good luck!
Thank you everyone!
