This doesn’t address your question but maybe the difficulty is because you’ve been applying for securities roles. Maybe you have a lot of experience in public company stuff but I do ECVC and I wouldn’t really expect to be that competitive for those types of roles.
Got it! Def a possibility to snag a securities role but I’d encourage you to apply to a range of roles like the other commenter said. Commercial counsel roles might be below your exp level but product counsel could be a great fit.
Have you gotten any interviews? Or just not hearing back at all? Your issue could be a couple of things depending on the stage you're striking out at.
I'm sure you've heard, but your first in house position is always the hardest to get. You may be better off going for something that isn't your absolute dream job, but has some attributes that will help you grow into the perfect candidate for your dream job down the road.
Mine is one page (hopefully that’s okay for someone who hasn’t job hopped in many years) and I must have reviewed and tailored it to each role specifically 100 times now, but this is good feedback!
I do tons of research like you mentioned as well. I spent probably 6 hours for my 3 interviews for the role I came close on. Seems like it may just be coming to bad luck, a bad market, and bad timing, which is hard to stomach.
Probably took me around 12 months leaving as an 8th year, with the last 4 of those months applying aggressively. I had a similar background, industry focused corporate (mainly ECVC/Cap markets and pubco representation) so I was applying across the board as I was open to venture roles as well as pubco roles.
It gets harder as you get more senior but it’s a numbers game. Keep plugging away.
Obviously ending at a client (if it’s an option) is always optimal. That’s what happened to me, ended up in a venture role. It’s a bit different from a traditional VC though as it’s in the privates investments division of a global asset manager.
Even if it’s not your direct client it’s helpful in getting noticed and knowing what you’re getting into. Coming in I knew the people, culture, and how they utilized outside counsel (important).

Does it have to be securities? Opportunities to do that at the kind of startup companies you described are limited.

Be shameless! Twice I asked people I didn’t even know personally and they were all willing to help.
Have you been casually applying past 18 months or aggressively/throwing apps everyday?
Probably aggressively for 6/18 of those months and casually the rest (due to sheer workload or the holidays, etc.)
