Been solo in fam law for approximately 8 months. Was a law clerk before that so did not bring clients in prior. I still haven’t gotten a steady stream of income coming in and my significant other and I are drowning. We were doing okay, but just received word tonight that my car is probably going to need a new transmission and we are no position to pay for that or buy a new or used car. Every time I get to thinking that I can do this, something else pops up to remind me that I can’t.

If you're looking for advice on how to generate business. In your area, I'd network with financial advisors. Go around, drop off cards, schedule lunch, schmooze. Referrals are going to be your biggest business generator. I say FAs specifically because if you do divorces, married couples will likely go to their advisors for referrals. I'd also network with estate planning, estate admin and tax attorneys. Your divorce clients will need accountants to help prepare their taxes in the year their divorce is settled. They will also need to update their estate plans. Find an attorney you trust to refer your clients too and they'll repay the favor. I'm an EP, tax, and estate admin attorney. And we are constantly asked by clients for a family law attorney referrals. Sadly, many estate administrations end in divorce of the executor/trustee and their spouse.

Other than the clerkship did you have any prior experience as an attorney? What state are you in btw?

I’ve seen or heard people going straight into solo practice and become successful. The people I know of did it years ago when technology couldn’t help us. I would say you should identify 2-3 big industries in your area/region and delve into that. How can you solve problems that the business people or just regular consumers are having in your area? Read up on that sort of law and go from there.

Find a large BNI group without a family law attorney to join. It will open up doors and help you with self promotion.

I’ve been offered a reporting consultant job for less than 60k and I bring 9+ years of experience to the role. They should be offering more. I don’t want to settle but I don’t want to miss an opportunity to move. Reporting consultants should start at $65k per recruiting sites. Any advice? How can I get HR/recruiters to offer more? TIA

I am interested in pivoting from an agency into a traditional business consultancy role. I have start-up tech experience and four years of Strategy experience for media clients. Are there any projects folks in consulting would recommend I take on to add to build on to a resume? From the outside looking in, it seems like there is an overlap in the core competencies of a strong strategist at an agency and a consultant.

Amazon Offer- Accept or decline?

Received an offer for non- tech CCM role and wondering if I should accept. I feel like I was lowballed and downleved despite having 6 YOE (relevant but not in tech). Not sure it will be beneficial to leave my current role for this offer to get my foot in the door.

I’m at the cap for salary at the level/role and can’t negotiate offer any higher.

Ex-consultant now in marketing. Used to be an avid follower here and got great insights on companies when trying to exit consulting so thought I’d try here for advice. Outside of FAANG, what are good large CA-based tech companies that provide good pay, WLB, and culture? DD has great people and WLB, but pay is low and you’re not given the tools and resources to succeed + truly make an impact. Google and Apple are ideal but need backups. Like is Salesforce still good? A company along those lines.

I am also an open source contributor for some NEXTjs related tooling.

I’ve been working at a rather prestigious midsized firm in a big city for almost a year and a half now. I have been having a lot of trouble picking up work from senior partners. We are required to bill at least 150 hours per month to meet our requirement. My months are typically only 110-130 hours. It seems like the senior partners already have their “go to” associate for things. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can increase my workload? I reach out for work pretty much weekly.

Former client( filed a bar grievance that was dismissed, sent me a demand letter that an attorney responded to on my behalf, and filed a BBB complaint against my non-BBB law firm) has now pro se filed a lawsuit against me in small claims court. Hi. I’m in need of advice and encouragement. I’m currently working as a public defender(2nd year) but I would love to pursue a solo private practice. We are a firm of 5 transactional attorneys and the bonus structure is very unclear. The usual “based on personal performance and firm profitability” language.
