Started at a new firm about 3 months ago to learn some niche skills - stepped down a level to start to ease myself into the role and learn the culture of the firm the first 6-9 mos. Somehow found myself immediately thrust into a project on fire. Overdue deliverables, invoicing way off track, 2 of the TMs actively searching for other roles, very angry client exec, a team that’s been overwhelmed so haven’t been able to bond much - not much capacity there myself, team also was pretty hostile to any suggestions from me at first despite being my functional expertise not inspiring a lot of confidence in me in current firm’s culture - much improved by now though and we have a good rhythm, my own Director has not provided much support past month 1 and has overall undermined/ constantly berated me/ been threatened by how quickly I adjusted since/ does not in general seem to like reports shine too much - you get the picture. Not an ideal start/ onboarding.
2 months later, project is relatively on track. Through listening to client concerns and remaining in close communication with client team my first few weeks, developed a great rapport with client exec and PM - and acquired client resources to help bring project to close as a result. The client exec now wants me to consider applying for a currently open Director position- which is my end goal - exit to industry at Dir level.
This company is nowhere near aligned to my target industry however and the role is interesting but also not the functional exit I’m targeting. It’s tempting bc my boss again is not the easiest to work for, has been excluding me from meetings - I don’t feel super valued, but I picked this firm for a reason. Like the work, need to stay here to learn some more things. The client project exec, is also not the easiest to work for, though I’ve come to develop a lot of compassion for them and the demands they’re under, and I’m concerned they’re not going to handle a “thanks, I’m flattered, but I need to stay here” well.
How would you approach? Anyone been in a similar situation?

That’s a good point.

The new role doesn't seem to meet your career goals of learning niche skills, nor does it pay enough to justify scrapping your career goals. It offers nothing more than an escape from a bad engagement. Stay in consulting, learn the skills you want, and then jump to something in line with your career goals.
Keep a good relationship with the client just in case though. You never know what could happen, especially if you joined a smaller firm where things could get dicey.
Are they paying more? If so take it.

Haha I know it sounds like it but the company culture is really not ideal and it’s not an industry I see myself in - at all.
