The ask… Take it. Use it. Share it. I continue to receive countless asks to speak on panels, keynote events, and sit on juries. When asked, my response always starts as follows: “Thank you for reaching out. If I attend this event, I ask that 13% of all others included in this event are Black. 13% represents the total percentage of Black people in the US, and this should be a simple and fair ask, to ensure that this event is diverse. If you find this to be a difficult ask, I have a list of 20+ individuals that you can reach out to, in order to help find this talent.” My list is only junior and mid-level talent. This is to make sure that we are creating more opportunities for those that need it. This very simple ask changed the landscape of several events I took part in. There were only 2 events that could not meet this ask; One of them made it to 12% the evening before I had to speak, so I pulled out of the event entirely. Anyone can make this ask. I have non-poc friends that have made this very request. If they can’t meet this ask, DO NOT ATTEND the event. This is not a difficult requirement to meet. #13percentrule #DiversityStillMatters

Anyone else tire of the “plant mom” and “dog dad” me too conversation? It seems to be more frequent. For example, company says, “Parents, please share pictures of working from home with your kids during Covid” for a diversity and inclusion project. Undoubtedly someone responds, “what about my plant babies? 🤣”. I don’t want sympathy but I find it childish. Just give us the courtesy of understanding that plants and pets are not the same. Stop “me too’ing”

Thought: When you see diversity of skin color as the most critical factor you miss out of diversity of experience and ideas. Quite often these overlap, but there are a lot of people out there like JD Vance who come from poor white roots, but because of their skin color they’re assumed to have some magical privilege bestowed upon them by society. When it comes to recruiting, is it good for the industry when the first word out of HR is "diversity" and not "talent?"

I come from a racist, xenophobic family that thinks feminism is ridiculous - lovely people, I know . My nephew is almost 3 and such a sweet boy, for now. I want to buy him some thing for Christmas that is subtly educational and teaches him the values of inclusion etc. Where are some good ideas on gifts for him? I have already bought him the Marie Curie and Amelia Earhart books, which passed my family’s ‘screening’

Since George Floyd's murder and the sudden Corporate America "wokeness," I (black guy) have been routinely contacted by unacquainted Partners who explicitly state something to the effect "Client X wants diversity, so we'd like you on this deal..." It really comes across as tone deaf and completely patronizing. I appreciate the efforts to diversity (albeit forced), but Partners really need to learn how to not be so supercilious in the approach. You don't have to overtly state that I'm the quota.

Do NOT claim you are "colorblind" in the workplace. 1. DE&I knowledge is now a core leadership competency. Colorblind claims will earn you the reputation of being DEI-ignorant at best & racist at worst. 2. Colorblindness within the context of workplace diversity is an obvious lie. You do NOT want to be painted as an intellectually dishonest leader. 3. Colorblind claims signal that you lack the leadership skills & vocabulary to have key conversations. Ask questions here, in this safe space.

I have a soon to be nonprofit church struggling because they already started services (collecting offerings too against my advice) before things were set with an EIN and they gave an event already planned out and are trying to find a way to spend and collect before the things are in order.
