The ex spouse does not have to be dead, that is survivor benefit which is different. I have attached a link to the social security website for you to go read about ex spouse claiming rules. I believe they got rid of the delay strategy in 2015 and you can only choose the ex spouse benefit or your own.

No. Could only do that if the ex spouse is deceased. Not to mention that you do not have the ability to choose what benefit you want if both people are alive if applying before your FRA.
Have to have been married for 10+ years (with ex-spouse who they are claiming SS benefits from) and he/she cannot be remarried. Correct on Lincoln. Recommend they chat with SSA rep - no matter the knowledge we arm the client with when walking through the door, SSA 'pushes the button' to start the benefit.
Correct EJ1, I thought you were saying they had to be deceased period.
In order to claim the full benefit of the ex spouse, they would have to be deceased. If not deceased, they would only be eligible for a spousal benefit equal to half of the ex spouses (potentially lower if claiming before FRA)
Thanks for the refresher
