Can someone explain the probationary periods listed on a lot of federal jobs? I'm getting ready to apply for a Parks Service job and want to have some insight into that before hopefully having an interview.

Probationary periods are normally 52 weeks (1 year) in federal service as an employee. Afterwards, as long as the employer has progressed well (which should be captured in writing) through a performance evaluation, then the employee becomes tenured and probationary period lapses.

During that period most civil service protection is waived — they can terminate you for almost any reason

It’s not too far off from private jobs and their probation periods when you first start. Basically you’ll be watched like a hawk during that time and room for mistakes is minimal. Don’t worry about asking for more specifics during your interview if you want to. Probably specific information to each job.

It's usually 180 days about 6 months

I can only answer for State of Florida jobs so the probationary period is one full year from date of hire with a monthly evaluation. After that you are considered a permanent employee. While on probation there will be certain things you will not be able to do. For example, telework or volunteer opportunities within the state agency. It will vary depending on who you work for.

I just lost my federal job during probation period.

It is simply a period of time where they can, and will, fire you for anything and everything...and you have no rights to appeal. Basically, while in the probation period you can be fired at any time and you aren't able to do anything about it. You aren't considered an "employee" so you have no appeal rights. You also can't get unemployment if they fire you unless they violate a law.

I know because I just went through all the above.

After the probation period you automatically are an employee with full rights and can't be so easily fired. That's why they have the period to begin with.

The period is now 1 year. It changed in 2023. It used to be 2 years.

Probationary periods in government jobs vary from 1-2 years. Designed to provide initial stability for employees, and ease them into the federal evaluation and appraisal system. Once you complete one probation, most other agencies or departments will honor the completed probation.

Each local or federal government have their own probationary periods. They are pretty open about it, so asking in the interview is a good way to find out how long it is.
Probationary periods depend on their restrictions. Here in NV, it really just keeps you from having to use your annual leave (you can use your sick leave, though). It's sometimes on the HR website of the government agency, so you can probably find it on there.

So i have been fortunate that i have managed to go through my career without the need for a degree. I was lucky enough to have been hired by one of the worlds top consulting firms, worked with a whole lot of big clients and travelled a lot.
