can’t imagine what kind of laterals Goodwin is getting these days

I applied to Goodwin because nobody would have me only for them to also reject me 😭

Probably not that different from the associates who stayed because they couldn't lateral anywhere else.

Mostly AmLaw25 associates or those in top chambers ranked groups. They are a top of the market firm with high standards, flexibility about in office, and a ton of strong clients. Say what you will about their culture, but the work product is well regarded and the partners mostly won’t hire “bad” associates (and certainly won’t keep them).

I certainly wouldn’t try suggesting to people that Goodwin is a firm that will hire anyone.

Why I never bother using recruiters. Better to send the referral fee to a friend or a friend of a friend at the firm I’m trying to lateral too. It’s worked out for me. Most recruiters are a negative value add - don’t understand my practice (the number of emails or phone calls asking me to join a “hot litigation boutique” when I’m clearly an M&A lawyer), offer canned or cliche “coaching” or “interview tips”, and are at best glorified schedulers. They claim to have “deep connections” with partners - um, no. With a few rare exceptions, partners are not talking regularly with recruiters. They don’t have the time to deal with some rando person and if they do, makes me question their practice’s health.

There’s a website called firm prospects that tracks this stuff by scraping LinkedIn data. It’s mostly peer firms or better (e.g. tech firms + STB, Kirkland, Latham, etc.). Believe it or not but Goodwin’s reputation on here and Reddit don’t really reflect its standing in the real world.

1. A lot of laterals coming in from firms like stepped ice Miller it seems

2. You never know if these are bad eggs getting pushed out and finding refuge at badlose

I have been working remotely since covid getting nothing but positive reviews. My company is not remote friendly and is now telling me I have to return to the office or I lose my job. I just found out a co-worker had a remote position created for them, without a job posting, without an interview and without the experience required (normally a license or certification would be mandatory). I understand life isn’t fair but is there an ethical problem with this?

Capital gains tax rate - I know there are diff rates (0/15/20) depending on income threshold but is the threshold based solely on “earned income” (i.e., wage)? Can you name a firm (preferably NY office) that lets its associates work from a different country with no issues? The mid-size firm I’m currently at has been very flexible during covid but I’m looking to change firm (biglaw). Since my family is abroad I find it extremely valuable to be able to do this (I did this even before covid for a couple of weeks, twice a year). I’ve heard firms like Latham and Paul Weiss don’t allow it for tax reasons.

Conventional wisdom on current firm counter-offering when mentioning you have a few offers? I have an offer at a large firm in Miami. Current large firm has no office there but mentioned they can likely let me be there in a remote basis. BCG and a few other law blog sites have advised against accepting current firm counter-offers, e.g., likely to leave, not loyal, off partner track, etc., but would love to hear everyone’s thoughts.
