I have seen a firm with two principal retiring and replacement is a senior tax managers to replace two people with lower level pay & additional responsibilities. PE backed firms are hiring tax principles with comp level for an experienced senior tax managers. At national cpa firm principle pay is about 1/3 to 40% of the book you are asks to oversee.

Recruitment reached out soon after my last meet-and-greet interview (about 6 to 7 people total) to tell me the team thinks I would be best suited for an Associate Director role with a fast follow of a Director promotion.

Recruitment can’t tell me what feedback is creating this gap but also won’t stop mentioning the positive praise and feedback the team had for me.

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!
