Hi all, recently a recruiter from Amazon reached out for an SDE 2(2+ years of exp. required) role and I'm a recent CS grad. I gave the OA (which was extremely difficult w/ 99% cut-off) and other tasks related to the OA. A few hours back, I got a call from the recruiter that I had cleared the assessment and tasks and said that they are looking for 2+ years of exp. I said I'm open to the SDE1 role and said she'll ask her colleagues. Idk what to expect now 😥 Amazon Amazon India

Chicago for COL that’s for sure. But if you are a single woman SF I hear is the place to play in life the bachelorette if you are attractive as it’s a sausage fest.
Tbh the women aren’t much greater - below avg looks = avg+ there. It’s the ratios they win

I love love love visiting SF, but I think California is going downhill quickly. Currently living in Chicago and it's not the same as pre covid but I think has a better chance to return to normal when the pandemic ends
You know who?

Purely based off the comp and COL, Chicago 140 all the way.

As someone who’s lived in SF, $175k is extremely difficult to live off of with a family. If you’re comfortable renting or living in a small house in distant suburbs then SF is a good option
Depends- Are you comfortable renting? Not owning a car? Sending your kid to public school? If yes to all of this, then you could probably get by on $220k if you do a small two bedroom place (I’m assuming you’ll be adding to your kid’s college fund with your income). Rent is a little cheaper now because of the pandemic.
Most fresh out of college engineers make at least $140k in the city.
You should also consider that CA’s taxes are much higher than IL.
Chicago for so many reasons w a family.
But also... could you negotiate your offers?
What's your thought on tent cities?
You have a family. Chicago.
175k is not nearly enough in SF. I personally dislike Chicago for the weather but the city is cheap and 140k should be a good salary for a family with a kid.
Completely different cities. Where do you want to live? The salary difference is negligible given COLA, assuming no big travel expenses to see family/friends, and IF you would much prefer one city over the other.
supporting a wife who doesnt work and a kid would be hard in SF, i say chicago and enjoy your money going much farther there

At that salary, you should be fine either way. Think about the type of lifestyle you want - Chicago is a great city but there are 5months of winter here and limited stuff to do outside the city.
SF is pretty much great weather year around and a lot to do up and down California.
Not just winter. It was 52 for 4th of July “hit different” summer.
Do Chicago and take a long vacation every January 😀

SanFran 175k is like Chicago 70k
If you were single and ambitious, definitely San Francisco. With a wife and a child, gonna have to say Chicago. x10 if you have family in there.
Chi city baby. I’ll give you all the recs
I have a friend with a kid who lives in South Bay and I am genuinely shocked at what they pay for what they get plus general lifestyle. Do yourself a favor and stay with Chicago and give yourself a chance at retirement

Yup. Sounds like the Bay Area life. So not worth it. Just saving up to we can buy our big house in Dallas or Tampa and bounce.
