Not recession related but I’ve been through 3 rounds of layoffs at F500 companies. Legal will be told to cut x number of employees. People cut first were underperformers, second senior people managing and making a lot of money but not doing a lot of substance, third people who were generally disliked. Everyone who was under 7 YOE kept their jobs since they were doing the most work for the least money. Newness to the company did not seem to play a factor
I’ve been through several rounds of layoffs at a F500. Every time legal is given a headcount reduction number just like everyone else. Who actually gets laid off depends on who your friends are and how hard it would be for them to get by without you.
In my experience they’re more likely to keep newer people, because they make less money and less likely to be disgruntled

Got hired at a high paying in-house job in 2019 at an existing client. Seemed like the dream. Got great reviews and a higher bonus than I’d negotiated. Got promptly laid off less than a year later after covid hit. My former firm did not do any layoffs. In-house can definitely be seen as an expensive cost center plus that last in first out thing - you haven’t built up years of reputation with them (time as outside counsel doesn’t count for much). The concern is real.

Yeah I got 4 months pay and website time so that was helpful for sure.
