Considering the current state of the accounting industry, and with AI and off-shoring becoming bigger threats, would you still go into accounting if you got a do over? I'm dreading the future of this industry. Accounting seemed like such a stable career at one point, what the hell happened?

Well the related question is, what would you do instead? Many fields are facing exactly the same challenges (or worse in the case of computer science majors) so figuring out which careers are spared is the big question.

Yeah I spoke to someone working as a programmer at Google and they face the same worries: AI and offshoring.

I think the more basic and entry level roles are cooked between AI and offshoring. The serious concern for the next decade to me is how in the world to orgs plan on finding experienced people for the roles that AI can't replace and they don't want to offshore? If we largely eliminate the learning roles for recent grads where is the development pipeline? This will only exacerbate the labor shortage coming out of college because what student is going to pick accounting if they have next to zero immediate opportunities?

If I could go back 18 years, I would pursue a career as a doctor. My brother is an internal medicine expert with Kaiser and makes +$440k and works about 16 days a month with 10 days off in a row regularly. It's stressful at times but the financial and personal freedom seem well worth it. We didn't grow up with a lot of money so financial freedom means a lot to me and I worry social mobility is rapidly declining in the US.

Same. I like helping people.

If I could do it over I would not have gone into accounting regardless of AI and offshoring.
