About to head to the HC for a role in ProdOps and Strategy in Mountain View. 4 YoE at MBB, no competing offers. Recruiter gave me a form that asks expected comp.
Levels.fyi has only PM salaries. I haven’t been told the level but expect it to be L4.
What total comp would you expect for this role? Any advice would be super helpful, as I’m a bit lost.

🫤 it’s fine, my work life balance and non comp perks is much better but you find new things to complain about, clarity in comp progression, ability to make an impact etc
@MCK1 it seems like your trying to empire build and power grab…
Yes. I will admit I’m not being stretched or challenged, however, and I too clearly come in under leveled (but I got paid more, so whatevs). The wlb and ability to impress by what I’d consider me going 75% is what I need right now in life.
Nice!
Reversing the question: are Googlers happy with all those newly hired ex-consultants?
There are some areas that have too many folks in S&O roles who are building decks, devising strategies and optimizing for planning cycles but not enough "doers" who are executing on these. I enjoy working with many ex-consultants but I wish we would hire them into actual line roles (sales, engineering, finance, marketing) vs. S&O
Not fond of ex consultants. They work like they are still consultants, trying to build decks and documents like they are still trying to prove to clients they did work and are worth the money for their service. They can be too superfluous in their prep and execution, aka needless bureaucracy.
Yes, enjoying better wlb, more money, awesome perks and overall a culture that fits better for me than consulting. It’s def not perfect but for me the goal is that every jump is an improvement.
At least you L5s and L6s have the good comp. Imagine being L4….
McKinsey - Nope, just interviewed with Google
The WLB and general level of stress are infinitely better than what I experienced in consulting. This said, the level of inefficiency, general pace of decision making, lack of R&Rs, political maneuvering, etc are far worse than in consulting. With the stock downturn and significantly slower comp progression at Google, consulting comp would likely far outpace as well.
External datapoint, all the above resonates at Meta in s&o as well…
Came in at L6 from being an experienced manager in MBB and got a significant TC bump. The perks and WLB are amazing. After a year in I'm also starting to see the downsides: Slower career progression, narrow job scope, chaotic org that keeps on changing and there are a lot of total useless pencil pushers that wouldn't last a day in MBB
Literally the same can be said for Meta haha
Thanks so much everyone who has contributed to this thread!!! Been really helpful. Feel free to share more thoughts too!! 🥰💜💜💜💕
Loved the question OP, so thanks to you for coming up w it.
Are consultants happy anywhere after consulting?
G15 what do you do at google and used to do at ey?
I’ve managed teams for years but managing Googlers is an entirely different challenge. What was my favorite part of the job is now my least favorite. Are you coming in as an IC or People Manager.

@OP (mckinz) - please note that levels are not the same at google when it comes to pay and prestige.
The higher prestige and pay roles are found in more technical job families.
When looking at levels - you need to consider the job / role family. Most people are familiar with the high salaries that are SWEs garner - but less known are that there are other job families like TSC, TPM, SCE that also pay very well - especially when you look at the number of hours worked.
I’m leaving big 4 soon to start as L4 S&O PgM. Staying positive and hoping it’s going to a good move
Honestly, to some extent, you create your experiences, learnings and trajectory. The right attitude is key
What’s PgM?
I’ve been at google for a few years now, ex consultant. Promoted from L5 (12 years experience when I entered) to L6 now. It’s been a good ride so far - pros: work with really smart people, problem solving is data driven and you see the work you do, stick. Cons: politics, everything is your problem (you don’t have a scope of work or stopping point), and your manager makes or breaks your career at google - so you better hope you have a good one.
How long did you move from L5 to L6?

An enlightening question - reading the answers made me kindda sad though haha. I wonder if the general sentiment among non-consultants @G, the same? Also, wondering what teams have an overall higher happiness index.
Yes, for my major increase in quality of life (pay, wlb, general attitude*, perks). Hired in at L5 IC. Work is work it’s not like you’re day to day will be “magical”. I’m glad I stuck it out to transfer in at L5 but part of me wishes I would’ve saved some grey hairs and made the jump sooner.
*Team dependent
Really try to assess compatibility with your team via the interviews. However, mobility within Google is common and encouraged so if it ends up not working out at your team you can try something else (after 12 months).
Are you folks talking about tech roles or PM roles in Google? I’m from consulting and I’ve a potential tech (application engineer) role in Google. Got approved by HC for L4 with 13 YOE.

50/50 in all honesty. It’s great because of the mobility internally and the career moves you can make. However it gets crazy political at times and can equal the same stress and hours I was at before hand.
Thanks for the sharing G5! :)
Anyone who’s not in or transitioned from S&O, is it any better?
