Bottom line: living in SF is fine, and the news stories don't reflect the situation on the ground. It feels like there has been a dramatic increase in news stories about crime and homelessness, but overall crime and homelessness have actually decreased. This has given you and others a skewed perspective.

Homelessness trends don't seem bad either.

Overall, I love SF. I lived there for three years before moving to SoCal for sun. It is a beautiful city.
I went there this weekend after 2 years and I’d say it’s a tad rougher than when I used to live there - like a bit more graffiti, and boarded up stores - but SF was a strong magnet for jobs and so got whacked by COVID. But it’s still a great city - the natural beauty, the people, the vibe - I’d move there if it worked for me.
Lots of people are getting duped by press reports about how bad it is so that they get a talking point against the woke Democratic city leadership or School District or whatever political boogeyman they’re after that week. But those players have very little bearing on what makes SF what it is, so it’s pointless.
