...advisory firm and try to transition from there after a year or would I be better positioned by staying with b4 strat for the brand name recognition?
Kpmg doesn’t have strategy. Plz fix
M1... you what?
If you’re in kpmg’s M&A group, that is not strategy work FYI, no matter what you label yourselves
I’m not here to defend our strategy group, in fact I think it’s fairly obvious from my post that I’m actively looking to exit in the near future. That being said, do you have any relevant thoughts on how to position myself for restructuring and turnaround roles? Lateral to another b4 or t2 strategy then try for rx consulting? Go to a “no name” turnaround shop? Wait it out and apply directly to Alix or A&M after 3+ YOE?
Depends on level and education. If you have your MBA, I know plenty of ex M&A consultants at both shops you mention. Is not that difficult of a leap. Starts with performing at a high level for one and secondarily networking. A&M is an easier leap tbh, especially if you’re willing to put in the hours. Helps to get relevant experience while u can, there are a few heavy hitting partners at kpmg, get on one of their projects and perform
Pretty easy at the manager level, just learn to create non gaap cash flow models (cash in minus cash out) and gaap three statement models. Understanding the nuances of those skills will set you up to breeze thru restructuring interviews. If you dont know how to do these things, you will be hard pressed to make a lateral.
Do you want to do operational turnaround or restructuring? The first is more traditional management consulting whereas the latter is financial restructuring. At Alix, you need core finance skills to join the financial restructuring group.
No they're different group - I talk to a lot of people who confuse the two. They're different skill sets and we test for different things so it's important to distinguish.
In our restructing group, you need to know your modelling skills. Think ex-bankers and accountants. A part of your interview will be a 3-4hr modelling test. No specialization until you're pretty senior (eg. bankruptcy contingency planning or real estate). Otherwise you're a generalist. You can have an industry preference but that's not required.
