Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

I’d take the title

Agree. Seen it happen a lot where the new firm says you’ll be considered for promo next year (usually a recruiter or your partner contact today). Then you start working and you never speak to the recruiter or the first partner who told you that ever again and the people you actually work with say it’s not happening but maybe next year.
Other thing to consider is sometimes (not always) manager spots are numbered meaning the group only has X manager spots they can give out in a year. Maybe they have 5 qualified but only 2 spots this year (because Covid). Next year there’s already 3 people ahead of you from people passed over this year, plus next year’s “on time” class who weathered the storm with the firm this year and will likely be positioned ahead of you because of their relationships and longer tenure at the firm.

I’d still take the title and look for a wfh role with the new title.
100% manager at big4
I’d take the title, and if you still want to jump aim for ~150 manager
Take the manager title at big 4 and lateral to $150+ to another big 4, boutique or industry
There’s a senior in my practice making 110, highly doubt there’s mgrs in my practice making lower than that

Your exit opp’s are way better coming from a big 4 compared to GT or BDO type shop that most in industry have never heard of
There is no guarantee you'd get promoted after 1 year. If market tanks, that won't be on the table. Get promoted. Get more money in long term

Take the title, job hunt after.
Another aspect of this situation is new job is completely WFH, which I highly value. Current position requires a lot of travel.

Former BDO here. Was told I'd get promo 1y after joining, that it was just internal politics/hr that couldn't hire me at level. Didn't get it. Left.
Take the level at B4 and then jump.
Interesting...while this offer isn’t with BDO specifically this is super helpful, thank you!
Others have already listed good points so I am hoping you already formed an opinion. But here is another piece of information. GT offers higher basic because the raises are pathetic and bonuses non existent. Also, the contribution to 401K is low and in the first year you don’t get any. Did anyone tell you that - I bet not. Also like big 4 there is not separate contribution to wealth management plans that’s another retirement plan. You lose a lot my friend. To top that - who moves parallel from B4 to GT?! The recruiters at GT always start the pitch with next level offer to get folks from Big4. I have gone thru it myself. So unless there is a specific motivation (which is fine), I would stay away with plenty of layoffs recently.

B4 manager 105k? Are you a management consultant? Sounds crazy low

OP, thanks for the clarification
Are B4 exit opps really that much better than say a BDO/grant thorton?
Yes big4 exits are better, but having that brand on your resume will continue give you credibility even after you move on
