Currently a mid-level litigation associate at a V10 firm in New York. Really like my firm, but decided relocating to South Florida is best for my family. Looking to move before the new school year starts (August), but don’t have a job lined up yet. Is it feasible to find a new job at a firm in Florida within the next month? Don’t want to leave my job and finalize move until I have something lined up. But with the hours I work there is insufficient time to study for the Florida bar.

Can you work remotely for as long as you can get away with it while you interview for new jobs? Realistically though most places won’t hire you unless you’ve taken the bar.

Possibly for a week or two, but not for a prolonged period.

FWIW I did a similar move from NY to a non-reciprocal state for better family lifestyle (think big, west coast, palm trees and surfing) but in the process of taking (and passing) the bar lost my “love” for the game. Understood the realities of biglaw before, but now I see law in general as an annoyance to be tolerated until a better alternative presents itself. Bet they didn’t plan on that being the result! If I could, I would transfer my passing score to a new kid starting their career out and let them utilize it — all that making me take the bar so long after law school and passing the NY bar did was piss me off and extract any remaining will to continue in this industry.

like

At this point nothing would surprise me 😂 just my luck my alternative reality is still stuck in biglaw

This might be hard to do without a Florida bar license, but I’m sure it can be done

How long do you spend on monthly reporting for your clients?
My 3-person team spends about 15+ hours a month each writing monthly reports for our clients (99 small retainer clients). We’ve received feedback that they’re too complicated and the clients just want to know - are we on the right track, what action items are there, and what any next steps are in their strategy.
How do you simplify without losing value?

Anyone else just sitting around waiting for the ax to drop? I'm a soon to be 2nd year corporate associate who has seen work completely dry up. My utilization held pretty steady around 50% immediately after shutdown, but August was below 15 billables with no appreciable work in the pipeline. Aside from letting people know I'm available and doing pro-bono/CLE, it's starting to feel like a serious "covidcation" leading to termination.

Explain to me like I’m 5. Why does the monthly billable hours goal on things like Intellistat change month to month. I’m not hitting hours this year. Last month goal was 158. This months goal is 180.

Name the most ridiculous micro-managing by partners that you experience.

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…

Senior attorneys at v100, how common is it for attorneys who start at small firms to lateral to biglaw? Have you worked with any? Conventional wisdom is always that if you don’t start there it’s hard to “trade up”. My coworker and I just did it to two different great v30 firms, and I’m wondering if it’s really that uncommon? Just out of curiosity. We’re not special counsel with special niche skills or anything, just associates. Pitfalls to beware? Positives?

Litigators—how many different cases are you on?

Been feeling spread too thin lately but I don’t know whats typical. Curious what others do. And would you mind sharing whether you’re a junior, midlevel, partner, etc??

I realize sheer number of cases doesn’t tell the whole story… obviously you can be buried on one massive case. I’m finding it hard to jump back and forth between everything I have going on right now, though, but I don’t know if the answer is to just deal with it.

To those at V25 firms, how do you view your London office in terms of the quality of work we get and overall importance to the firm? Like is there a perception of us being a step down or ancillary to the big leagues of NYC or not? There’s generally a perception here that L&W and K&E are the only US firms where London can even begin to compete with stateside in terms of generating l work organically but would be interesting to know what you all think?
