I’d rather be at the PE portfolio co and the extra $40k is the icing. I’m guessing this could lead to positions with transaction incentives, which could really impact total comp.
I have no direct experience as I’m lower on the totem pole than you but I just got a funds flow that showed the CFO who came in a year before the sale process started received a ~$1m transaction bonus, which was double his market level salary.
Transformation would give you similar exits to consulting plus exits to leadership roles in the company/industry or another portfolio company. You can probably have much more of a personal impact on the company in the transformation role than at the faang role
Do what makes you happy and feeds your soul
Just because it's a PE-backed company doesn't really make a difference unless you're c-suite. My experience in working long term with PE firms is that they might pick and choose some key roles across portcos (CEO, CFO) but it's rare unless you're a specialist. And I'm sorry to say that transformation is not considered specialist.
I don't think the money should matter. What kind of work do you want to do?
OP, sounds like a search fund. I actually think you're better off staying in consulting and seeing if you can get more involved in PE-driven M&A and PMI, before making the jump to a more senior position within a portco. I just don't have much confidence in these transformation team roles in giving you a fulfilling career.
Also is this base salary we’re talking about here. If so, pe Backed firm no question
Currently working Transformation in a PE backed company after exiting consulting.
Turns out it was really internal consulting.
If you don’t have equity and a written promotion plan built into your offer, ask for it.
Happy to discuss further on dm.
Fin Ops is a back-office function. If tech is your goal, it’s better to go into Product Management. I’d go the PE backed transformation route. You’ll get to work directly with leadership to influence corporate strategy
