Currently pregnant and hoping to lateral after maternity leave. Any advice on when to reach out to a recruiter/start the process? Mid law to big law if that makes a difference in your answer

What number child is this? If you want to change firms ASAP after leave, I’d start applying a month before you come back. But I would really consider giving yourself at least a couple months back at your current firm so that you can get accustomed to your life with a baby (especially if this is your first). Starting at a new firm with a young baby sounds nightmarish.

Have you previously worked in big law? Going from mid law to big with a new kid in the picture is something I would strongly caution against.

It is worth speaking with a few recruiters now and finding one that you get on with and trust to approach the market properly. Probably still too early to make applications but no harm in conversations at this point in time. It will help to give you a realistic sense of the market.

Just out of curiosity, what’s your practice area?

Always appreciate hearing other perspectives! :-) thank you for sharing your experience!

Mostly agree with Recruiter 1. Go ahead and talk to a few good recruiters in your area. (Depending on your location I’m happy to make recs if I know people, feel free to DM.) Find one you like, and they’ll be ready to start the search when you are. Depending on the length of your leave, I would suggest starting shortly after baby comes, you can hopefully line something up for right after your expected return.

Hi! I have many years of experience in Compensation and Benefits (HR) strategies to attract, retain and motivate talents in big corporations. I have 7 years healthcare sales and 1.5 years as a MLO.
