I disagree with PM1. It maybe a harsh place foe business/logistics people but I heard pretty good feedback from phDs and data scientists there. WLB in BCG isnt so much better either.
Besides, for a data scientist, Amazon is a way better brand and the work you will do is cutting edge (and REAL) compared to what we do in consulting. Data scientists in consulting on average are less skilled (vs Tech) and the nature of client work is not letting them to do the best and latest work in the space.
Amazon is a much better choice IMO.
Just to add, Amazon DS job is not automatic disqualifier for any CDO jobs. You will lead a team and you will lead a department someday if you choose to be on the management side rather than individual contributor. But BCG may have better CDO ops in general business, while Amazon will have better CDO ops in tech business.
Go to amazon. I’m in Gamma and don’t see a future here. Travel here vs tech makes the wage gap too high
We have a 3 day policy but realistically it’s Mon-Thu
Depends on what you are looking for. Long term I do think data science will be commoditized. What will be imperative is the ability to lead data science teams, know common pitfalls, and being weak data science teams in legacy companies up to current state of the art. Work in tech if you want to focus on bleeding edge data science projects, but work in consulting if you want to be hired as the next CDO in F500 companies.
It depends what you are searching for:
- Consulting is usually low key in terms of tech but offer consistently high salaries.
- Amazon on the other end is expected to be more advanced on tech and offer broader comp schemes (eg stocks).
Overall I’d recommend doing tech in a tech firm, doing business in a business firm.
Get out of consulting if you want to do DS. But you will quickly realize (if you have only don’t consulting in your career) that it’s really not in the same ballpark in terms of the type of work. It will be much more technical and prepare to spend many hours with your headphones on staring at sql and python
ugh fuck i should switch to ds
Data scientist turned consultant turned data scientist again: definitely Amazon.
D2: MS in CS, with research in AI.
Was your first "official" DS role right out of that masters program? And if you don't mind, who was it with/what was the description?
Bcg is the better brand and full of smart people. Plus Amazon is known for their crazy long hours, unreasonable expectations and toxic work culture both in the warehouse and in the corporate space
WLB better at Amazon. BCG better if interested in business side in future
Well, are the two offers in the same ballpark that make it a hard decision? I recently got an offer from AWS for AI/ML work and the comp alone makes it a no brainer to leave my consulting job. Not to mention the quality of project in technical perspective. Luckily my role would also involve some level of business dev
And amazon is a huge company I’m sure you will find a role in it that suits your career future when the time comes. If you really want to go back to consulting I don’t see any problem having amazon on your resume. The other way around might not work if you want to focus on technical work. I feel technical folks are always the 2nd tier in consulting.
I’m a few days late to the show, but I just wanted to say thanks to all the responses, I’ve just started my Masters of Data Science (coming from a Bachelor in Finance) and I was leaning towards MBB data arms, so this gives me some context.. thanks! :)
Amazon would be the better option. Any thoughts and guidance is much appreciated
To those getting offers on Amazon AI/ML/DS teams, what are your qualifications/experience? Interested in working my way there
Really appreciate the insights, find the idea of taking on debt vs continuing to earn pretty frightening but from all the job postings I gravitate towards it looks like the market agrees with you, I also work alongside a good number of peers with an MS that landed at the same position as myself which made me a bit wary of legit ML/DS job prospects with anything less than a PhD
