“Reflecting on and adopting the use of micro-affirmations would be a positive strategy to prevent microaggressions. Micro-affirmations are small acts that foster inclusion, listening, comfort and support for people who may feel isolated or invisible in their environment. Focus on action, not avoidance – create new good behaviours.”

I like Deloitte's move. I hate the idea of putting people in buckets based on race or any other "class".
The entire idea of a diversity/inclusiveness program is silly. You include/exclude people in this program with special treatment based specifically off of non-changeable physical traits. Sounds like discrimination, which would be the opposite of diversity and inclusiveness.
One of the major goals of D&I groups within the firms is for networking purposes. If you're shitty at your client facing job, regardless your role in a D&I group, you're not getting promoted/could be fired. Being part of a D&I group doesn't get anyone special treatment, it's just to link minorities at staff, senior, manager roles to Partners and Principal's who they feel they can connect with for advice and how to excel in their career. Idk how anyone thinks being in a D&I group gets you special treatment.
I don't think most straight white guys understand this, because they've never been in a real, longstanding minority role in any population. I don't agree with affirmative action, but private employers supporting diversity programs internally is hardly real discrimination.
@pwc3- straight white male here... I understand it fully. I lived in Asia for a few years. And not the big city still lots of white guys Asia. It was the, don't see another white guy for months on end Asia. So I've been in a real, longstanding minority role to an extent that most minorities here never experience. And I've been on the receiving end of discrimination far worse than not having a special group at work with people that look similar to me... To be clear, nothing nearly so bad as in our history, but discrimination nonetheless. Regardless, I still loved it there.
But here's the thing, discrimination is discrimination, and it's wrong no matter the situation. There shouldn't be special groups based on skin color. Everyone should be able to be proud of their company because skin color/gender isn't even a consideration, rather than them being dedicated to diversity and inclusiveness (ie, skin color/gender is a consideration)...
When you say dropped their diversity program what exactly does that mean?
Very interesting topic given the recent article from a Google engineer writing about moving away from diversity and inclusiveness programs and moving towards a meritocracy. I haven't read the article (mostly because it's not available to the public) and don't want to turn this into a political debate - but it seems like if you try to say you don't like D&I or things should be normal you are automatically deemed sexist/racist/hater/conservative right/climate change skeptic/trump voter/etc etc. thoughts?
PwC is fully on board announcements were plentiful after the others dropped theirs.
I think it makes sense, honestly! I'm part of EY Unity and BPN but don't fit either demographic. I have learned quite a bit from each group and have been able to participate at a level I wouldn't have outside of the groups. I feel like more folks would participate without labels which would get closer to general D&I goals.
*totally off
Just to clarify, deloitte did NOT drop diversity groups. They will remain on local levels and will cease existing on the national level only. Locally there will be inclusion councils PLUS diversity groups. Budgets for each local diversity group will come from the local councils (I.e. no longer from national), which is a change.
Funny that PwC is touting theirs. I'm part of the diversity and I've never seen any support around it.
I agree pwc2. We pretend to be so accepting when we're actually quite the opposite
My dad is a minority race, which makes me part-minority, and I've heard him tell of racism in his life. Given that, I still would never retroactively blame whites for all problems in my life/his life and I would not demand reparations. Being American is the best thing that could have happened to my family and we're proud to be American!
^AS1 hit the nail on the head. Whether you want to admit it or not, those on "D&I" groups are judged by those groups. Sometimes in small ways, sometimes large. The only programs I know of/have participated in are for the sake of networking and providing support because empirically, our careers are much shorter in public accounting. If you think we're getting special treatment then perhaps you should go educate yourself on D&I programs before mouthing off on them
There is a budget for these groups. You said yourself that there are activities to give you additional opportunities at networking with partners. You proved my point perfectly... Lol
They all get special treatment. Didn't say I loved discrimination, it was despite it of course... But I did say that it's wrong no matter the circumstance... Companies don't tolerate any discrimination, so if you see it, fucking report it. So Ya, "our history" was full of real shitty racism and discrimination "currently in the US" you can get fired for discrimination and rightfully so. You shouldn't have to put up with discrimination in the workplace.
Anyone can join and participate in any ERG/Affinity Group/PN, regardless of whether or not they fit the demographic of the group at most companies. This is true of the EY groups for certain. That being said, I don't think anyone associated with the D&I groups have opportunities that aren't available to others.
Looks like they are moving to Inclusion Councils. I'm curious as to what that will look like. It seems the thought behind it is somewhat to remove labels and make their D&I efforts even more inclusive. I could be tot off, this is just based on what I have read.
Does this include WIN and those types of groups?
