Despite some flaws, Special Education in the US is the best in the world. I lived in Latvia for a few months one summer to help provide speech therapy and English lessons, and their existing methods were terribly outdated. What do you think? Are we the best SpEd in the world? If not, who is the best? Who is the worst?

We absolutely are! We have teachers here from other countries, such as Africa, to work and learn how to meet the standards of teaching for students with IEPS. They will then go back and teach the teachers how to teach our ways.

That's cool that they are learning good teaching methods directly from us!

Many countries view special needs kids as uneducable and therefore they don’t even attend school.

like

Honestly that is so sad 😞 my heart breaks for those kids.

I don’t know about too many other countries, but I have been to orphanages in China. Special needs kids ( at least up to 2006) were abandoned at a much higher rate and care ( forget education) was marginal at best.

So, so sad 😞 I have never been to China, very cool you got that experience! I feel like foreign travel really changed me and helped me be grateful to live in the US

I have not traveled or researched enough to know… I know it could be better here…..

Definitely. We have so much we can improve on!

Monday Morning rumination: unsolicited advise is criticism.

Much to reflect on with this topic. Last week I was told in a 1:1 with a new contact that I was “too direct”. After some time chewing on the conversation I was struggling to place the emotions I was feeling. Turns out I was feeling guilty and shame for being me, for taking up space. Lesson of the week: unsolicited advice is a criticism of you, a micro aggression of who you are, and being “too much”. What would you do??

Did anyone else adopt the new Florida Wonders curriculum? We just adopted it this school year, and I teach 4th grade. My team and I have not found a good flow, schedule, or whatever you want to call it. We feel like it teaches too many skills in one lesson, and we are not able to truly teach anything “deep” enough for students to master. Does anyone have any insight? What do you do? Do you like the curriculum? Why or why not? Would you be willing to share what you do weekly/daily? Thanks!

I feel like I'm at my wits end. I teach self-contained classes and according to the ISBE website my classes shouldn't be more than 8 students unless I have an aide - then it can be 10. I have no aide and most of my classes are around 14 kids. Some with behavior plans that are only out of our behavior room setting for my class... Is anybody else out there going through illegal class sizes for self-contained? How are you dealing? Maybe a vent session is in order.

Too many cooks in the kitchen

I love my job in special education, the job may bring quite a bit of stress and exhaustion but nothing compares to the stress of the related service team. OT, PT, speech, BCBA, social worker, etc etc is really what’s killing me this year. It is 23 days into the school year and the team members all make different plans and as a result, nothing is being accomplished. And if paraprofessionals follow ie what OT says but not PT, it cause so much unnecessary conflict!
