Sucks, but if its not in writing it never happened.
It's fine to express your disappointment respectfully but don't expect them to be able to do anything about it.
You can express disappointment if you are a top performer (5, maybe a 4 rating), are well respected by the partner In question , and do so in a respectful manner.
"Thank you for the raise. I know full well the firm had a down year, though am still disappointed given my responsibilities and performance."
Something like that, then talk about your goals for the year
Really feel like the "promised" part makes you sound entitled, and that you may piss off your partner if dropped like that
Does that surprise you
My legitimate question in all the threads like this one is: what are you hoping can be accomplished by doing this? What good comes from it?
Not a lot that can be done at this point. I also think it's how you express the disappointment and if you have relationship with the partner. Mine was receptive but whether anything will come of it has yet to be seen
What's the appropriate way to show you are not happy then? I have my call tomorrow and know how much % I'm getting which is certainly less than I was promised last year when I joined.
Who promised you something? What were you promised a specific % or $?
OP - "promised" without having it in your offer/contract....I'm surprised you believed it and made your decision on such basis. If you're not happy give feedback during your discussion; but don't expect something will magically change.
Considering the bonuses/raises we get, I'm not really sure being taken well by the partners has any actual benefits tbh
OP how bad was it?
I tried to negotiate when I joined EY last year but was told that they will give a good hike to match my expectations after 1 year with the Firm.
Started with 100K as S2 and I was negotiating 120K. HR mentioned that the partners will raise the base to 120K after I complete a year with the firm.
The partner who interviewed me left the firm.
