I went straight into government and have no regrets. I got to do actual legal work in my early years while my law school classmates at big law were doing doc review.
I recently joined a government agency, after 6 six years of private practice and I’m so glad I had that experience before joining government. First, Many (though not all) government agencies specifically seek people from private practice precisely for all the reasons you’re questioning whether to do it at some point. And now that I’m there I can see why. While there are always exceptions, I see the difference between my purely government colleagues and those who come from private in subtle and not so subtle ways. As a subtle example, those who come from private are more polished. As a not so subtle example, those who have always been in government are more relaxed with things like getting back to clients or important stakeholders. As a big law associate, I would have never taken more than a day to get back to my clients, and that happens in government pretty regularly, and it’s accepted. While it’s accepted, however, those who don’t operate like that are spoken of much more highly and respected. Now, every place is different, that’s what I can speak to from my organization so take with a grain of salt.
This is a great answer and tracks with my own experience coming out of 5-6 years in big law.
I regret the money and also not being challenged. I’m not a competitive person so it’s probably for the best. But think I’d learn more if I was working 60-80 hours a week with pressure to be better than the rest of my class. Maybe just a grass is always greener point of view.
Are you me?
I was an M&A and a large firm after law school, then went to a boutique and spent a year in house before my current gov job. Money was good but skill building doesn’t compare to what I get now.
You do learn a lot about how certain industries work will in the private sector which has helped me in my current gov job, but beyond that money was the only positive for me.
I went straight to DOJ and would not change a thing.
I went straight to government and then went private after 6 years. I still miss the government days. Depending on the job, the work may even be more interesting and fulfilling. There are definitely different skills (and vantage points) from each side. I feel like I need both to be more rounded in my area of the law, but if you can make the money work, I do not think starting in government is the wrong way to go at all.
Similar boat. I'd like to leave government and go to a big ish firm. What'd you come in as, senior associate, of counsel?
I feel like private practice helps you learn and tighten up processes. Depending on what you do in government (transaction, litigation or compliance/regulatory), you’re probably going to be mostly using a predecessor’s templates, and you may have trouble with best practices.
Yes; been in government 5+ years now and thinking about making the switch to Biglaw, if possible. I don't see a viable long term career in Government when 1st year associates are making double my salary.
Zero regrets… gained immediate experience and got all of my loans forgiven.
I went strieght to govt and will be 5 years in government in January! I don’t regret it for a second- especially seeing friends and family shredding water at firms. The WLB is amazing and the work is interesting. I’ve gotten more experience as a 5 year attorney than most other attorneys. The training, responsibility and opportunities are amazing. I plan to stay a long time!
