Do most people leave after making senior? Are there drawbacks to leaving before if you are making higher pay?

You should leave at Manager. Senior is fine, but you'd have more leverage as a Manager to jump to a higher level.

My career advisor said that three levels are the perfect exit in consulting:
- 1 year in, as you'd have more experience than any 1 year experienced person outside of consulting
- Manager, as you can get to director in industry
- VP, to get to C level positions.

All other levels are sub optimal exits.

likehelpfulsmart

Sub optimal doesn't mean bad exit 😉 I think as a rule of thumb those three exits (C, MC, VP) are optimal in terms of time in consulting and possible exit-bump, both for title and pay.

How do people stay past 2 years? After the 2 year mark, I feel compelled to leave. I start hating everything at that point. Sure there are pro’s and con’s to leaving as a first year senior but this is all made up really. Bigger picture, it doesn’t matter.

like

Yeah I’m dreading this next year.

Do what’s best for you, OP. Advice like MC1 gave may work for them, but not everyone. I left ACN for EY right after my promotion to Senior for a big pay raise. It worked for me. May not for others since I had a lot of previous experience. I personally think that Senior and Manager are probably the optimal times to leave (for me) since I can own a product/work stream and use that to move into product management. If you’re looking to move into sales, then manager or senior manager (or Director at KPMG) would probably be best so you could really leverage BD work.

Consulting provides a very structured pay and promotion cycle. Moving to industry may provide greater comp initially, but tends to have fewer and lower promotions/raises.

likehelpful

That’s what I did. The best time to leave to a competitor tends to be right after a promotion since you should be able to pull a back to back 20+% raise and you won’t reset your promotion timeline. Obviously, politics can change that up significantly

I have been a top performer in every sales job that I have had since I started my career almost 10 years ago. I currently work out in the field selling to customers that have no idea I am coming and I consistently perform at the top of my market.

So I’ve been with a court for a while and honestly the pay sucks compared to what paralegals should be making… the benefits are great though and they match my retirement 100% now that I’m vested at 3 years.I have 4 kids and 1 is getting ready for college. I feel like the benefits are great but I’d rather make more now. I am a previous LEO for 4 years who switched to paralegal so I have my leo retirement. Paralegals here make $28 with no benefits what is a good compromise

Recently accepted a temp role as an HR admin for a former employer. Previously interned there & left because my supervisor did not have any growth opportunities planned out for me; this was in spite of my stellar performance, as reflected in my 90 day review. She has since left the company, but there’s crazy turnover in the company & in the HR department in particular. Just that an HR coordinator resigned. Is it worth going back into a dumpster fire w/ no leadership to gain experience?

I’ve been working for my State Farm agency as a team member for 2 years. I am licensed in property and casualty as well as life and health, but only make $13 an hour. I technically can make bonuses but I’m not supposed to dig into a sale and I have to send it to a sales rep (I am service and retention mostly). My boss also has me running a retired agents office until a new one is chosen (its an hour away with no pay increase or mileage pay). Also, no benefits! Should I start job searching?
