Yes of course. First question asked.
This isn’t a question that should need to be asked. Don’t lie or embellish your background check.

Typically, yep. They normally look at titles and dates of employment.
Yes, 100%
Job title is one of the few things (along with salary and dates of employment) that most employers are willing to confirm these days.

@D1: That's missing a key distinction. Employers in 21 states are prohibited from asking prospective employee salary history prior to making an offer, but can generally confirm it after an offer is extended.
See this summary of the Massachusetts salary history law for an example: "Employers cannot request salary history information. They can, however, confirm prior history if volunteered by the applicant or if an offer has been extended. If known, previous pay cannot be a defense to a pay discrimination claim."
Or this summary of the Washington law for another example: "Employers may not seek pay history. They may, however, confirm that information if the applicant voluntarily discloses it or if an offer has been extended."
Most bans prohibit employers from asking applicants for salary history at all, or using salary history as a screening point, or using it to set pay, but most do not prohibit employers from asking former employers to provide salary history as part of the background check process after an offer has been extended.
Those bans are also focused on the prospective employer-applicant relationship, not the applicant-former employee relationship.
How does the Big 4 manage all of this? I'd imagine they get thousands of these requests per day
I'll opt out and I'll provide that information on my own accord, as requested. It's too easily accessible by anyone with an Equifax employer account. A violation of privacy IMO.
of course, dont lie
Oh no I’ve been using a little creative liberty with my job title, am I screwed 😭
Yea I’m not fundamentally misleading anyone about what I do or what level I’m at, rather just a clarifying title
