No, you don’t. And more importantly, absolutely no recruiter, CD, or agency that you’d ever want to work for would begrudge you for getting laid off right now. It’s happening in droves across the industry. To everyone.
Good luck!
What CW1 said. It’s absolutely NOTHING to be ashamed of. Especially now. Be confident in your skills, and you’ll be fine.
if i get laid off i’m not changing my status on my resume or linkedin for the next few weeks at least. unless it’s a huge sweep and everyone is posting about it like ogilvy
Is there that much of a stigma about being laid off that even in a pandemic you feel bad about talking about it?
You don’t have to write a LinkedIn post about getting laid off or anything, but definitely start reaching out to your network. After getting laid off last month, I recently got an interview that way.
Why not? It happens to everyone.
It’s a badge of honor now.
Do you mean in an interview?
Like, if they ask, "why'd you leave your last job?"
You may want to look into the laws in your area. I think potential employers can check length of employment, job title, and maybe if you quit or got let go.
I'd hate to get caught in a lie that stupid. Stupid because people get laid off in advertising all the time and it's nothing to be ashamed of. Especially if it was a Corona virus layoff.
When you get the job, just say you just got laid off a day ago or so.
Change your LinkedIn status to freelance. I got laid off a year ago and started freelancing a week later. I more than doubled by annual salary, finally got a real work life balance and have not been happier. It’s cliche but getting laid off was the best thing that has ever happened to me professionally.

Probably just repeating everybody—no you dont have to, but in no way would it count against you right now. Its happening to lots of people and its not your fault, your agency’s or even the client. Its a friggin plague, an act of God.
You don’t. But considering the current state of things it seems to be the usual. In my previous lay off experiences I played one off as the company was changing direction/my new job which was already lined up poached me. Unique situation. In my second lay off which I was totally bummed and still bummed about. I painted it like I was looking for freelance to enable me to have access to a wider/more creative range of work.
If you have goals make it look like you were taking your own steps towards those. But like I said, what isn’t a lay off right now. No shame.
When you’re talking to the unemployment office, def mention it.
