Do you think biglaw is a uniquely unhappy vocation? I happily worked for a few years before law school, but in “cool, fun” positions, academic grants, etc. So I’m not sure if my current dissatisfaction is with biglaw, or maybe I just will hate any traditional office job.

It's no less fun than the fun tech jobs I had. The not fun part is the. time commitment.

Most of my friends today are non lawyers and in demanding roles in tech. Big law is uniquely bad. And yes, a lot of it has to do with the time commitment and uncertainty, which is truly terrible. It’s easier to stomach if you don’t have much of a life outside of work (your hobbies are “going out” and “restaurants”) and all your friends are lawyers that work the same amount as you. I make less than I would have if I stayed at my firm (currently making 400k+, big tech), but I only work 10-5 no weekends. My life is night and day different. I hated being a lawyer in BL, I like being a product counsel in-house.

Did 4 years in biglaw, clerking now, returning to my firm in a couple months once my clerkship ends. Really enjoyed biglaw while I was there and have missed it throughout my clerkship. The work itself wasn’t always fun, but I really enjoyed my coworkers and am genuine friends with them outside of work. Good coworkers make all the difference.

Wow, this sounds like a unicorn deal. Everything I’ve heard said BigTech in-house is terrible hours and that, if you go in-house in other fields, you are likely 250-300. Maybe I’ve been misinformed?

FAANG can be bad but I’m not at FAANG. Think Stripe, Ramp, Notion, Databricks-tier tech companies. Lots of money to throw around. As with anything, can be team dependent. I know a lot of in-house lawyers in tech making way more than 300k with reasonable WLB. I will say that these roles are hard to come by. My team is not big.

Hi boys & girls!

Joined a big firm (Big4) not long a go and starting to feel like I got a good grip on my current work.

I've always been very technical, so I think that the only thing I am missing now is making sales. (I really wanna make partner)

Can any seasoned lawyer share tips and materials (i.e. books) which can help?

Would it be a good idea to join a Social Club where potential clients spend time? (gym/tennis/paddel/events)

Any advice welcome!

What is considered a “large” caseload in employment litigation? I work at a large L&E boutique law firm and handling about 14-15 active litigation cases in state/federal court or arbitration. Some of these matters are multi-plaintiff and multi-defendant cases, but none are class actions. This does not include any matters I am handling in the charge stage or in pre-litigation. Not sure if that’s a typical caseload or not?
