Do you think managers should ever jump into tip pools? I’ve seen some take a cut because they claim they’re “part of service,” but it always feels shady. We already know margins are tight, but when leadership dips into the pot, it feels like betrayal.

The only exception is if the manager is truly working floor shifts in a tipped role. Otherwise, their pay should reflect leadership, not tip income.

It might be acceptable at certain times, but in my opinion it’s just bad form. If someone insists on handing me a tip for something, I just hand it off to the nearest dishwasher.

I’m not sure of every situation out there, but it typically isn’t a great look for the manager. They aren’t on tipped employee wages like we are.

They better be in the trenches with yall.

I think if they are in pool, they should get the same hourly pay as the rest of the people in pool. Its unfair to take a piece and still get your manager pay.

I don't think managers should jump into tip pools. They are typically being paid a higher hourly rate or salary than anyone else. There is no reason they should be dipping into that.

Yeah typically managers shouldn’t get tips - unless they’re like honestly doing the job of a server or bartender because nobody is there to do that job (say someone called out and nobody could cover). The tips would just go to the house at that point…

Managers and supervisors cannot be part of a tip pool that includes tips earned by other employees. This is prohibited under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to prevent managers from keeping a portion of their employees' tips. They can receive personal tip handed directly to them. It is wage theft and illegal.

Absolutely not unless the managers salary is inclusive of tips and the employees know this from the start.

I have jumped in waited tables, hosted, bartended, I always turn whatever tips I get, and sometimes I make a bundle, over to the hourlies. I make a good salary, they don’t. I couldn’t even in good conscience ever take money away from my hourlies for any reason unless something I did was done as a manager and not an hourlies job. For instance I have been given a $100 tip for managing and preparing up a wedding event. I gave them ideas, even helped with a musical band selection, and went to he trouble of getting a very difficult imported beer we didn’t buy but I got brought in especially for them. That is the only time I will except a tip. If I seat someone because we are on a wait and they hand me a $20 or a $50 I always give it to my hosts to split amongst themselves. This creates loyalty and trust as well. I do this for them and they are
much more likely to come in for me if someone calls out. I was an hourly a long time ago. I remember how good I felt when my managers would help out and give me the money. I had one manager who used to make at minimum $100 a night shifting people around on the wait list
and seating those who coughed up the cash. This was back in the old days when this was super common. He never gave us a nickel as hosts and we hated him. Our Asst Mgr would always give it to us and we would fall on the sword for him. We all worked so hard and the GM was a complete dick. I never want my employees to feel that way about me

Check the overtime laws for your state!!

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.
