Do your firms have a billing code you use if you don’t get enough billable hours in the day? Like say you only billed 6 hours one day. What do I do about the other 2 hours?

I mean, you don't make stuff up to hit 8 hours, but I think we all use "filler" codes, like professional/legal reading, administrative, CLE, etc when we're at work but can't assign it to a client.

like

We need a minimum of 4 hours on our time sheet every day. Given that I’m on track to exceed my hours this year, some days I just bill the minimum. It makes up for the days I’ve had to bill 12+.

like

Just 4? That would be great. We have to do a minimum of 7.5, even after working all weekend.

like

Literally “Administration” or “Administrative tasks”, no one cares, assuming this is just something you need to fill out so the time entry thing doesn’t ding you for the day if you’re under 8 hours?

like

I’ve billed as low as 1.2 with no filler code and haven’t been told shit.

like

Admin (usually admin), professional reading, find some CLEs to do, stuff like that.

like

“Attend to administrative matters” everytime

We have a Time Not Worked code, but I never use it.

Don't know and don't want to find out.

My body hurts, my stomach is in knots, my head hurts. How is it that I have to mend a broken heart but also meet my billable hours lmao

I currently work at a medium sized firm and have about two years experience in personal injury litigation. Have any of you taken "low bono" clients while working at a firm? I want to take on a low bono client or two but not sure who would get the money. This is a contract opportunity through a non profit so I'm assuming a 1099 will be issued. The per hour rate is significantly less than my billable rate. I would (obviously) like the money but my real objective is just getting experience/networking since I recently moved to a new state and don't have clients of my own.

Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

Senior attorneys at v100, how common is it for attorneys who start at small firms to lateral to biglaw? Have you worked with any? Conventional wisdom is always that if you don’t start there it’s hard to “trade up”. My coworker and I just did it to two different great v30 firms, and I’m wondering if it’s really that uncommon? Just out of curiosity. We’re not special counsel with special niche skills or anything, just associates. Pitfalls to beware? Positives?

Name the most ridiculous micro-managing by partners that you experience.

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…
