On the verge of leaving law but getting cold feet. Could someone talk with me? I feel like it’s just a matter of not getting good mentorship but I’m concerned my feelings might not change elsewhere. I just don’t know. I wish I could just have a mentor and guidance

Is it difficult to break into tax with little experience?

I’m in the same boat. Would be happy to chat. Looking at an offer to pivot into a VC firm, which would be a mega pivot save for the state of the economy that gives me jitters.

I'm more than happy to chat, feel free to DM me. Recently left law to start my own company and been connecting with many current and former attorneys in the coaching and professional development space, as well as lawyers who went on to other things. There is a lot out there outside of BigLaw as an attorney and it's just a matter of figuring out what excites you and whether law is the right path.

No, it’s a job board for laterals to apply to jobs directly as an alternative to recruiters. We work with a couple of coaches to provide free interview prep to our users and I’ve also just been networking with a lot of folks in that space from conferences/industry groups, we have guest articles in our newsletter, etc. Gaining interesting insight into different career paths.

Feel free to DM me. I do a lot of mentorship.

Among my law school friends is an artist, an IT specialist, a sports commentator and a hairdresser. If you you have a passion for something else go for it. But if you love law and just maybe not happy in your current role/firm take time to refelct and what you can change about your situation.

Hi everyone, I'm new to Canada and want to start my career here in the Financial and Banking industry. I have passed the CFA level 2 exam and was wondering if I have to complete the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) as most of the job postings here mention about it. I saw that if someone passes at least the CFA level 1 exam then the requirement of CSC is exempted. Can anyone enlighten me about this? As the CSC exam costs above 1000 CAD, I wanted to be sure if I need it before investing behind it.

I'm an introverted person, like to keep to myself, focus on work, spend the rest of my time on family, gym etc. I've been told that I need to work on my communication and client relationship building skills. any books I can read? Personally I am happy and love the work but fear for my career progression.

I have a promising interview at a relatively large law firm in my area (+100 attorneys) next week. The position is for a transactional role in their real estate practice group, and they are seeking someone with at least 2 YOE. I have a bit over 7 YOE with a strong real estate/commercial lit. background. Over the past two years in my current position, I've been doing a lot more transactional work. The split is around 50% transactional and 50% lit.

I am a first year who just started a couple of months ago and I am literally confused all the time. I did some small work for two partners and they loved it, so put me on new deals but the mid levels I am staffed with absolutely hate the work I do. One said the work I did was laughable. I felt bed because I spent over 25 hours on this. I wouldn’t be very bothered but the other Associates in my class are killing it. So I just feel dumb all the time.

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?

I’m a 9th year in a mostly litigation-based practice group at a one-tier partnership firm. My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? Try to get a NEP/counsel position at another firm, which is likely difficult in my market, or offer to take a class cut by a few years?
