Check out if the school had a cannabis society or journal, but to be real with you, that’s not going to matter compared to getting into a T14. If you want to work cannabis law, you’ll need to be a top lawyer and get into a top form that handles those cases.
Respectfully disagree regarding the top law school requirement. Maybe that is true for big law, or maybe Oregon really is just full of weirdos, but most cannabis attorneys I know, myself included, did not go to a prestigious law school.
Honestly, we are just business transaction and litigation attorneys that know cannabis regulations and cannabis specific issues to keep an eye out for. The largely successful attorneys that do transactional cannabis seem to just be very involved in the industry as a whole....aka they smoke alot....so clients know them and are friendly with them. Litigation, hit or miss, but most business transaction attorneys work with a litigation attorney so when a problem pops up, another attorney at the firm takes over.
I think some of the oregon law schools started to offer adjunct professor courses on cannabis law.
But honestly, I would suggest going to a law school in a state that has established recreational marijuana regulations (3 years or more). And go to a school in the state you want to practise in because the regulations vary pretty drastically between different states. Because of that, learning or taking courses on cannabis law in Colorado will not help much if you want to practise in Oregon. However, any state that has legalized it and has courses on it, then you will at least become familiar with similar terms.
For example about regulatory differences, I practise in Oregon and Washington and they have significant regulatory differences regarding disclosures related to financial interests in the licensee. Also, if you aren't familuar with the state regulatory agency, it can be difficult to know how the agency actually treats their rules in practise and how it settles violations.
