Does anyone know the breakdown for compensation for Lewis Brisbois associates? Or similar sized firms? Expected firm profit over salary? Overhead costs per attorney?

I work L&E at LBBS in CA. I am a first year, make 105 and Bill 2k a year. The billing is on par with the area but it’s pretty easy to hit. My practice group is pretty chill and I have a decent work/life balance. I also get a lot of control over my class action caseload.

Considering last year I billed the firm 550k, I think it’s about time for talk about a raise or maybe looking at that firm across the street that pays nearly twice as much for the same hours.

The rates on most of the insurance cases are garbage—low 200s or some even 185–but I usually work on higher rate class cases without awful insurance companies.

In sort, they pay below market for biglaw by a lot, their hours are comparable to biglaw but relatively easy to hit, and it’s pretty good experience provided you get in a good practice group. It can be a good place to cut your teeth in some complex cases and jump ship to real biglaw.

For me, I moved into a new area where I had no connections and am happy I got picked up at a not terrible firm doing interesting work.

What’s the context of your question? Are you trying to figure out what they pay or what the “should” pay?

like

Yes, the firm actually collected just under $500,000 as reflected on my billing reports and my salary is around $100,000 total comp.

like

You have to distinguish between profits per employee and profits per equity partner. The latter is, in my view, a better measure of the profitability of the business because it’s essentially revenue minus expenses (including associate and other non-Partner compensation) divided by the number of owners.

LB’s 2019 PEP is reportedly $951k, which puts them roughly in the top 90 law firms in America. For comparison wachtel’s PEP is in excess of $6.5M. But many other perfectly respectable firms are around $1M. Beware that firms can and do manipulate their reported PEP stats, and that PEP tells you nothing about the comp of any particular partner.

like

Sure. I need an email tho. IM me and I’ll send it.

like

Entry level is 100k, plus bonus if you hit your hours. Easy to hit hours.

LB is essentially a 1200+ attorney insurance defense firm and they pay considerably less than both similar, smaller, and larger firms. I have had a few law school classmates who work for 100-350 attorney firms receive offers at a salary less than what they make at the smaller firms. Friends who work there have reported a decent work-life balance as a trade off for the lower compensation of other big firms.

like

Size could not matter less re: Lewis Brisbois. They are what, 1400+ attorneys? And they don’t pay Cravath scale. It’s “big law” but not “BigLaw” in the way most people think about it.

All I know is they pay their newer associates somewhere around 100, and the bills I have seen have their billing rates MUCH lower than I expected (sub $200/hr). GL and medmal though. I’d believe L&E or other practice groups were different.

It’s definitely not big law. Come now.

There’s a wikipedia page I saw once that showed profts-per-attorney (I presume after overhead) at Lewis Brisbois waaaaaay lower than most other big law firms.

Hi! I have a quick question and could use some advice:

I have 1 job offer that is an hour away and pays 45k, after negotiations (Research Associate Position at a University) .

I have just interviewed for a position closer to home and a base salary of 65k, but haven’t heard back from them in about 2 days (He said he would make a decision by yesterday and I’ve reached out).
I have to decide on the first offer by Thursday but I haven’t heard back from the second yet. Thoughts on next move?
