They can but definitely don’t bother unless they’re auditing the codes / tax area you’ve been charging
As far as I know a different country is definitely a no go and could lead to consequences due to multiple factors. I do know people who have done it and gotten away with it. I’d limit the time spent outside of the U.S though as it seems risky
There is an information security team that monitors the network traffic and reports it to leadership. I have seen a case where this guy just logged in for a few minutes to do some piece of work and his counselor reached out to him within a week asking for justification in writing, along with a warning about the consequences.
Around 5 years ago, I was in Capgemini Consulting (now C. Invent). I was working by myself on a project for an Utilities company, on-site, and was pretty autonomous. I (SC) lived nearby, and asked to the client wherther they would have a problem if I worked from home for the most part (excl. meetings and such). They said they didn't, and I started doing it.
For several weeks, everything went perfectly well, until the SM responsible for the project appeared in the client's office and searched for me. He called me and we had a SUPER TENSE conversation about the nature of our work, and about the need of having to report this kind of stuff, and ask for permission. He was quite a j3rk, so that's why I tried to communicate with him as little as possible anyway, but I agree he had a point: this kind of stuff should be shared with your supervisors. If you want to keep in good terms with them, I highly encourage you to have this conversation beforehand; consequences of doing otherwise may be painful.
