Does industry really pay more? I’ve interviewed with 3 firms now for a more senior position but the pay is less than what I would make in consulting.

Industry rarely pays more

like

Top CEOs make more than partners.
VPs make more than project leaders.
Otherwise consulting higher.
Of course a super generalized summary.

like

Depends. If you are at a firm that averages less than 100k for mid level pay, then yes. If your firm pays mid or entry level around 100k then no.

likefunny

What you see on FB is not always the correct info

like

I went from 150k as a manager to 180 base to tech.

like

I thought Tech paid comparably but that doesn’t seem to be the case (all three firms were tech)

like

Depends on industry. E.g if you go into Retail, likely to get a pay cut. In FI, likely to do better, esp in strategy roles

like

Tech companies pay more to developers.

like

Isolated anecdotal example so take it for what it's worth - I left a big 4 firm for a client (startup). Went from $80k to $105k with $10k signing and 15% annual bonus.

like

It’s likely a less stressful job too though.

like

Generally the bonus in industry is much better. Many director and above level roles have 30% bonus.

like

OP, I didn't realize it is was a pay cut. Unless the new job is something you really love and enjoy doing, or affords you a work/life balance that you can't get anywhere else, I don't know that it's a smart move. Obviously, I don't know the details so take this with a grain of salt.

like

People leave jobs for different reasons. You have to ask yourself why you want to leave consulting? Money? Work/life balance? Getting off the road? Stress? Opportunity that the role provides? You are in charge of your career choices and only you can make that decision

like

Uber pays shit, pretty much anyone with less than 3 years experience goes in at 70k for my small sample (5 previous coworkers). They get promised this great equity bonus package but it vests monthly over like 5 years so it’s basically worthless. Promotions seem very slow. Average tenure of those 5 people was maybe 2 years. Great perks though (Uber credit, catered lunch and expense dinner; most of them used Uber eats on weekends and office food during week and never bought groceries)

like

Yeah 100-110k was what the three firms were offering for a sr associate position

That's not terrible. My other offer was from EY for $95k + $5k signing.

@PM1, yes, it’s not terrible but it’s less than what I currently make

A2, I agree but I don’t know if I should take a pay cut to leave consulting

What about for senior associates? I’ve been hearing 10%.

I have yet to find an industry job that pays more. So I'm still a consultant for now.
