Why am I considering this???

I have an initial recruiter phone interview with Square Thursday. Is it it just a phone call or is it a video call and they didn’t specify. If it’s a video call what’s the dress code like? I’m coming from consulting so all my interviews were in suits. Any tips to get past the recruiter phone screen?

Yes vesting schedules are pretty common and vary a lot by company. Some organizations have immediate vesting where the employer match is yours from day one while others use a graded schedule where you earn a percentage of the match over two to four years or a cliff schedule where you get nothing until you hit a specific year mark usually three years and then it is all yours at once. The fact that your first two companies did not have this requirement was actually pretty generous on their part. It is always worth factoring the vesting schedule into your decision when evaluating a job offer because leaving before you are fully vested means walking away from money your employer promised you.

I believe it's the minority, but there are many companies that have a vesting schedule. Smart companies have a Safe Harbor plan that keeps them from failing discrimination tests and provides immediate vesting. Sadly, my company isn't that smart. I'm close to retirement, and if you're over 60, you're fully vested immediately, so I'll get all the (small) match. It's one thing I really want to change here and haven't yet been succesful.

I have seen this become more common. I get why companies do it for retention, but I can also see why employees find it frustrating if they leave before qualifying.
