Earlier post on sharing salary with friends and family got me curious. Are consultant salaries that much higher than other white collar jobs?

All of my friends and family are either in tech or medicine, so my salary is comparatively on the lower end and I’ve never really considered what I make to be that high.

I make $190k with 6 years of experience buddy - that's more than 96% of working individuals in the US. How is top 4% not on the high end?
The average is around $41k yearly individual income, and that's including folks with many more years of experience in the workforce than me. You may need to reset your expectations...

OP, at most established consulting firms it takes at least 5 years of consulting experience to make Manager, with most folks taking longer than that. On my side, I am a first year homegrown Manager

Generally speaking, yes, management consulting is relatively high. If you were to search the salaries of a similar role/yoe at your clients, how would you compare?

Also keep in mind the average American household income is around $55k. That’s generally below the starting salary for a consultant.

Yes, we’re in a very fortunate field that allows us to continue to rise. I’m friends with a good amount of civil engineers and scientists. They went to a comparatively much better school than me, and I didn’t realize until recently how much their pay has plateaued.

Consulting comp varies widely by firm and service type. Salaries are only significantly higher at MBB and boutiques (or Big 4 Partner level). I work at Big 4, and my salary is in-line or slightly above the average of my friends (10k-30k diff, which isn’t that huge). Friends in trading or other niche finance areas are comped significantly higher than the rest of us (100k-200k diff).

That said, consulting offers continual increase in salary at an accelerated rate, not always true in industry (imo).

like

How much do you make? I'm in tech consulting making low seventies, and just getting by.

The base has gone up significantly in recent years. I think even just 2 years ago B4/ACN starting salaries were in the mid 70s not mid 80s (that was right around the time MBA comp jumped up to 150 from 130ish). Many of the people that started prior to the big bumps of the past couple years didn’t get their salaries adjusted upwards, leading to situations where one year’s fresh grads were out-earning the previous year’s.

Engineer here. I think base + bonus here are close to consulting but then equity is what takes the cake. At google equity is a pretty safe bet but it may not be the case in smaller startups etc

Depends on what industry and location you’re comparing against but I generally agree with you that consulting (outside maybe MBB) is good but not spectacular money (especially if you factor in hours worked).

Since many consultants travel frequently, salary adjustments typically don’t fully cover COL variation. That means that in HCOL areas consulting is going to pay less, relatively speaking if not absolutely.

With tech, base salaries are often pretty close to or lower than consulting for similar levels but big tech has RSUs that basically add 50-100% to total comp. They often have bette work-life balance too.

Medicine is medicine. It’s hard to compare salaries to a field where you basically spend 4 years pouring time and money into a black hole, another 3–7 years making less than entry level consulting money, and more if you want to leave open the possibility of teaching someday before you finally reach your first (admittedly very large) big boy/girl paycheck.

Finance can pay a lot, but there’s a lot of variation in outcome (speaking mostly about trading as I know more about it). Sure, if you’re really good at what you do you can make a quarter buck in bonus 2 years out of college but you could also be stuck with a base salary lower than consulting and no transferable skills outside trading.

So yeah, me being a consultant here in the Bay Area with a technical skill set is basically begging to be underpaid (I think I’m like 60th percentile here vs. 90%ile for rest of country). Fortunately, though, I landed with a firm that hasn’t laid off anyone in the last 3 recessions, and that stability is valuable in the current situation.

Does an MBA (US) make sense for me? Male, Indian, Age 32, Married working in tech consulting with 10 YOE. Base is $165 with steady increases and bonus is typically 15%. Becoming a manger in my current company/path will probably get me there in terms of TC. Also considering EMBA from a good school (Wharton Global, Duke, Kellogg, Booth).
