I know associates that do better work than seniors and even some managers.. just the way the world revolves.. stay away from people like that, they are good at pointing the finger
OP I also think that there are a lot of bad manager promotes. It seems all that impression management that got the person promoted, isn't worth much when a crisis happens at the client.

@pwc2 There is nothing that can take the place of experience. While I agree that there are associates that can execute better than seniors and managers. Eventually execution won't be enough. Having diverse experiences will dictate how you react when serving the client.

Yup I'm a senior and I'm doing associate level work. Tbh it makes the transition to the job a lot easier. You're right tho: this is something that's fundamentally wrong with the promotion cycle/system.
Someone is bitter
When you generalize every senior like this -- it kinds of undermines our effort and hand work for Clients.. not sure which practice you are from and how many seniors you have worked with-- it's not always about money .. seniors are brought in based on experience and where I agree that many associates might be better than SA, I disagree to the fact that all are that.. experience e counts...
This is true of every industry, your new salary is highly likely to be based on your previous salary.
