EY vs PwC
I’m currently an M @EY and might consider moving to PwC as SM in the next months.
I love my current job, projects and the management at EY, but moving to PwC would give me about 20% raise (M—> SM transition).
At EY i need to wait until 2024 for SM (maybe 2023 - if I discuss my aspirations with my Partner, with whom I share very cordial connect).

What is the advice of fellow fish bowlers: stay with EY (familiar environment) or move to PwC (more salary, no connections) ?

Pwc no brainer but I would try this first: Leverage PWC offer for EY to match

Explanation: SM to Partner requires sponsorship/support of senior leaders/network which you already have at EY and will have to start again at PWC (only applies if you wish to stay in consulting until Partner)

like

Good point on the network change. It makes a difference not only for promotion, but also ability to get on the better projects/sales opportunities to help you make better numbers, which impact bonus and speed of progression.

like

Just something to think about, SM is two steps away from partner at PwC. That said, it does serve as a good transition period between being a team lead/sme to being much more accountable for sales and client relationship.

like

As someone who joined at the M level it’s really hard to build those connections from scratch. If you feel confident you can do it, PwC will get you the SM title and salary faster. I don’t think it will do much to accelerate SM to P though because of the impact to your network/relationships

like

SM at PwC is two steps from partner because they have Director in between. In essence, you are as far from PMd as you are as Manager at EY.
Salary raise is certainly a factor but if you are 1-2 years from SM at EY and have a solid network and backing, might not make sense to switch to the same level at PwC.

like

SM and manager are very different be sure your not setting up yourself for failure for a promotion

like

SM at PwC is equivalent an experienced M at other big4. I made this switch from a SM role at a mid market firm to SM role at PwC, and I have to say it’s extremely difficult at this level to rebuild your network and internal marketing brand. Plus as a new hire you get staffed on the crappies projects nobody else wants. So I am not very excited about the switch. And I have almost 1 year at PwC. My advice, is ask EY to narrow the pay gap as much as possible and then decide. If you’re happy where you are, why fix something that is not broken.

like

No conversation is ever useless.

like

Just to add: not necessarily looking to become a P @Big4, because I would likely leave the consulting career and become self-employed, let’s say in 5 years from now.

Ok, stay at EY

I’ve been told my company is changing my title from Associate Director of BD to Sales Executive. I’m concerned it reads like a title demotion. Is it just semantics? How will this look for my career development? Curious about the standard perception of Sales Executive from a seniority perspective. Where does this land on the sales roles hierarchy? For context, it’s a professional services firm, I’ve been there 3+years, and they gave a Sales Executive title to someone who just started 5mo ago.
