Are you under 25?
Ok, so the AAA under age waiver doesn’t apply then. I don’t really have advice on which company to use, but do take pictures of the car beforehand in case they dispute any damages. Also a photo of it returned (they tried to tell me I didn’t return the car on time once). Our corporate policies normally take care of this in consulting, but obviously you don’t have that protection for personal travel.
Silvercar - no underage fees.
There are promo codes floating around that make it cheaper than traditional rentals.
Rented for 4 days this spring in Denver for $200, significantly cheaper than AAA+Hertz, or Hertz+under 25 fee
Don’t buy their insurance. Your personal insurance will cover the car.
Try corporate rates. It’s way cheaper but less availablity sometimes
The reps will try to speed you through the part where you look over the car. Don’t be bashful and take your time - not everything is immediately apparent. Point everything out to them. Take pictures on your phone I’ve everything even if they say they’re not concerned.
Check your credit card benefits to make sure they provide secondary insurance if someone hits/dings you
Don’t pre-pay gas
General rule: The rep at the desk does not have your best interest at heart. Stick to your guns. My experience: I booked a great deal and the desk rep said he would give me a government rate to get a nicer car. Ended up being $150 more expensive.
