First year associate in a major market anxious about my first mid year review. Billed hours have been hit or miss (most weeks 20-30, some one off 40-60 hour weeks) and I've gotten very good feedback on some assignments, but also know for a fact I've annoyed a midlevel and senior associate by being slow, using wrong attachment internally, misinterpreting instructions on particular assignments, etc.

I'm sincerely worried I'm going to get raked over the coals in this first review. Advice?

Im a mid. Even if im annoyed at a first year if they dont do anything egregious I wouldn't write a bad review. Id just correct the behavior and keep on trucking. If they keep doing it I probably just wouldn't staff them for a year or so

Missing calls to go to the gym when you were supposed to take notes comes to mind.

At my firm, associates aren’t allowed to review other associates until they are fifth years. So you may be in luck lol. Regardless, I would never leave a bad review because a first year pmo. You’d have to do something egregiously bad for me to write it in your review. At most, they may give you constructive feedback but that isn’t a bad thing.

Has anyone ever asked to renegotiate their salary after starting a job? I’m 2 months into my new job and I have far more responsibilities than what I was told. It’s a lot different than what was relayed in the posting and during the interviews. Additionally, they hired my counter part in as a senior manager which is at least $30k more than what I make. My peer has more experience so I expect that but I feel that I should be paid more, however I don’t want to leave a bad impression… any advice?

Hello everyone, I'm a cs grad student graduating in may making a career transition from mechanical eng to cs. I had an internship but its been hard to find a fulltime dev role. I was thinking of taking a lower position at some company and working myself up maybe BI to DA. I would like to work as a dev but a lot of the small companies are offering salaries significantly under 100 for jr dev roles. Any thoughts?

Mid-level when she's leading the call: please make sure you take notes. It's expected of the person not leading a call (note I always take notes)

Me(jr): asked to lead a call for a different deal as training. Mid-level doesn't take notes (also on call) and tells me it's the job if the junior to take notes.

Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I turned the offer down. A partner that I clicked with while interviewing reached out asking me why I turned down the offer. Should I be honest and relay what I heard?

Maybe stop saying yes to matters that are too small to justify our rates and staffing an expensive senior person on them when you’re already dying trying to get anything staffed. Did your firm’s leadership send a message re the horrific shooting? Before I lateraled we always got emails from leadership, which IMO were very humanizing and appreciated. New firm leadership seems to just avoid — probably to not appear politically involved. Your thoughts on these types of current events and firm acknowledgment?

How do you bill your time? The busier I am the harder it is to bill. How do people actually bill contemporaneously in detailed terms when you bill 12 hours but literally did 100 different things in those 12 hours. And it’s never slow enough to go back and do it super detailed.

I’m have a new theory about why juniors always feel like idiots and wanted to see if anyone else thinks this makes sense. I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? And FWIW I went to HYS and I’ve had a clerkship so it’s not like I’m not smart
