Firms have struggled with this position. You can tell by the variety of responses. The title itself changes on a regular basis: A Partner, Principal, Executive Director, Managing Director.
It has, and continues, to provide confusion in the marketplace.
There are certainly MDs that do the same thing as a partner and quite a few do it better.
Unfortunately comp differences with the partner level are, in most cases, very significant and unwarranted. Any NQ comp plans are outdated and have not kept up with market trends.
In substance, the position has become a permanent senior manager position.
It allows firms to not promote qualified women and men to partners, which allows them keep inflated earnings per partner stats.
Yes there is a supplemental, nonqualified pension for MDs. MDs are NOT ‘the same as any other staff,’ PWC1. SMH...
If nobody else knows, I’d venture to say MDs are the same as any other staff. They’re still employees while partners/principals are owners and have their separate insurance retirement pension etc. Technically they quit as staff and re join as an owner
Mds don’t have a pension, but the 401k contribution is very generous (i believe. 10–15%)
