Here a European from one of those communist countries who use taxes to have free ish healthcare and that.

I'm about to move to the US and just realised that paid holidays are not a thing there. What's the deal? Some agencies better than others? Can I get days even if I don't get paid? So much to do outside of work, I need dayzzzz

If by “holiday” you mean vacation, that info is incorrect. If you have a staff job at an agency you probably get 20-25 days PTO (aka vacation). You will also get 12ish holidays (days like Christmas and Thanksgiving, aka bank holidays in the Uk).

And FYI, don’t say “holiday” when you mean “vacation” here- most people will be confused.

Do you mean my buttocks? I'd be flattered

Most agencies give paid holidays to full time workers here, my fellow comrade-in-ads.

like

Da whut. You’re coming to the US without knowing the general landscape of work and paid time off?

I’m dayzzzed.

Come, enjoy non-communism. BTW, Ad jobs have vacation days paid, yes. Non-paid? That’s between you and the job.

I’m also a European who’s moving to the States. Buckle up, buddy. We’re in for a wild ride.

They are not mandated but most ad agencies are pretty generous. Especially those (like Publicis) that have European roots. We get around 12 or 13 "holidays" in addition to vacation, sick, and personal days. Our two-day holiday weekends have gone to three-day holiday weekends this year and they have also given us extra days off "just because". So... it all kind of depends on what agency you end up working for.

Are you going to be freelancing or staff? If staff you will get paid days off. Freelancers do not.

I’m a European who’s already here and some things I wish I knew before I moved are:

1. Everything is negotiable, even benefits such as amount of paid vacation days.
2. Don’t try to understand the healthcare system, you never will. But always get it in writing that a doctor will take your insurance before you see them.
3. Always be prepared to get hold up in customs when you travel into the country.
4. Avoid the DMV at all cost.
5. Don’t forget to calculate tax and tips on top of everything you buy. And don’t forget to tip.
6. Start saving in your 401k immediately.
7. Make American friends (no I’m not racist, it’s just a really good way to assimilate quickly).
8. Don’t start all your stories with “in my country…”
9. Don’t go to the Midwest.
10. If you want to stay, make sure your employer files a green card petition for you as soon as possible (or marry, I guess).

The kind of advice one wants to read. Thanks, fellow continental friend

Paid holidays are a thing in the U.S. Most companies observe 10-12 of them, with some extra bonus half days and summer Fridays thrown in, plus the time between Christmas Eve and the new year.

My anxiety makes me good at my job. My incessant checking, and double checking, and analyzing has earned me praise, trust, and early promotions. But I’m so validated by my performance...sad isn’t it? Hope I’m not alone.
