OP: you should not put dog in those institution like boarding facilities. Those are like prisons for dog where they end up living with gang of dogs all of a sudden after living in comfort and alone in your household. They often get bullied and barely any human attention and are left to live by themselves. Best is to find a family based boarding, those are plenty and can be found on rover or if you ask around in local forums. We always board our dog with families where he feels like home and has only a dog or 2 for company.
OP - don’t consider cost to be a factor for your pup. They are family and treat them the way you will treat yourself.

Boarding, family or house sitting by friends
What was the longest you have boarded the dog before? How did the dog take it?
Boarding. Unfortunately my friends circle is not into pets.
10 days. He cried the first night but was okay otherwise. The place is family owned ( in Chicago) and they were really nice to my dog which helped . We did send him for day care a few days prior to get used to it. 1 month is a bit long tbh. If you have a family/friend to take care, I would go that route. Try posting them on Nextdoor to see if you get some suggestion from neighbors. I feel your pain - all our travel are dependent on us finding a good stay for him.

It varies. Mine is very anxious and we left him at a boarding facility for 10 days when we went on a vacation. He was depressed by the time we came back. Apparently he didn’t even touch his food for several days at a time and he wouldn’t eat any food for almost one week even after we came back. He was just lying down, did nothing for a week. We were devastated and decided not to do that anymore. Now a days, when we travel we hire a house dog sitter to come and spend a few hours with him at home. She visits him 4 times a day (one hour each visit). He is much more comfortable in our house and adjusted well to this arrangement. This costs an arm and a leg ($160/day) but we are left with no choice.
Damn.. I’m concerned about visa issues that end up delaying trips by weeks. I hope I can work with a trainer to address separation anxiety for my dog. Looking to adopt soon
