I think it really depends your own interests, and finding a job that you enjoy. Personally, It took me 6 months after college to realize accounting wasn’t for me. I eventually moved to IT consulting -> internal audit -> wealth management. I also have friends that stayed in accounting and are doing extremely well. Key is to find what you are passionate about and work towards it.
I networked a lot with the folks in the business line, also passed the series 7 while I was in IA (not sure if they still sponsor that anymore). I applied for an open position that was not posted because I knew the person that was leaving and she told me they needed a replacement. I interviewed with like 5-6 MDs, and was hired. I think it was a bit of luck as well as being prepared.
It’s way too much work for the salary. Get out as soon as possible. I was working as an assistant controller for 80k was a miserable time. The job was overwhelming
It’s very company/firm dependant. I have a great WLB and enjoy the work I do and the people I work with. I’m in accounting advisory (used to be in industry) so the work isn’t monotonous at all, and clients need help with all different things.
The pay is far from meh. I make 210k before bonus, and I’m barely in my 30s. Most people hit 100k by their mid 20s in accounting (HCOL). It’s not hedge fund money, but we don’t work hedge fund hours 🤷🏻♂️
Accounting operations - Not sure what you do but I worked in global operations for many years. I enjoyed it but many of my former colleagues left after a few years, got promoted to VP or director level, or transitioned into a sales role. If you are still young, and can afford it you should become a software engineer. "Coming from an accounting background can be particularly useful for those wanting to switch careers to become a software engineer."
