The DoD agencies have a big active duty and retired workforce and it’s a different culture that I don’t like. Very mission first and I’ll never put a job ahead of my peace.
Fed pay is public. If you don’t want a cut/big cut then only apply for higher grades. Just know that the higher grades are few and far between and more competitive. There are also regulations about pay so the only time you will be able to really negotiate is with your first role. So whatever grade you apply for will have 10 steps. Some agencies will let you negotiate steps higher than the first one to get close to your current pay or due to any superior qualifications, some agencies will not allow you to negotiate at all and you must start at step one. Some will also let you negotiate leave you can earn. Every new fed starts earning four hours a pay period. You go to six after three years of service and I think eight hours is after ten years of service. So if you have been working in a similar area in private sector you may be able to negotiate starting with six hours of leave.
Most fed roles are GS but whatever pay plan the role you apply for is will be listed on the announcement. It will also list the range. Most people say they took a pay cut to go fed but the benefits make it worth it for them. OPM is a good first step if interested in pay and fed benefits.
Why is the process so long? Extensive background checks?
