I once did a website for a friend who wanted to start his own business. He didn’t have time to help me fix the railing on my stairs in the timeframe of two years. Wishing I had sent him an invoice for said website in hindsight.
Don't do that ever. Do work on setting boundaries, being honest with friends and relatives about your availability to help, and managing your own expectations. On that last one, essentially have none. The point of a favor / "free" help is that you don't get anything back and you don't expect that either. If you resent it afterwards then it either wasn't genuine or it wasn't really a favor. Do it if it comes from within, do it if you believe in the golden rule regardless of the world around you. It is hard. But I say No to things that push my buttons and yes to things I enjoy doing or people who I want to help anyway.
Yikes, that sounds very entitled. Why can’t people just do things to help another? You’re a VP, act like a leader.
@VP I did this when I EP’d a post company. The favors and add-ons pile up. The next year, a new producer/client/cost-consultant looks at the previous year’s bid and says you did all this work for that amount, when in fact, you did a ton of it for free. We started doing exactly what you’re describing as a means to show how much they were getting for free. Being a vendor is rough these days.
I’ve done free work before and the situation always ended up badly. I’ve had relatives ask for free work and say, “It’s not right to charge family.” I’ve had friends ask for free work by promising, “Don’t worry. You’ll get credit.” (Wow, credit?! Really?! Thanks so much!) In the end I decided no free work for anyone. Period. I tell them I get paid good money to do this for a living, and if I spent my time doing free work for everyone who asked, I wouldn’t have time for my real job. Just say no
Why are you doing free work for people.
Agencies should do this for all pro bono work.
Charity clients can be such ungrateful divas.
I’ve got a lot of needy relatives and idiot friends
What kind of favors/free work are you doing? Is this for others at your agency or people outside the agency?
Not. Lear if you are talking st work or for friends at work, listen to EP1 for friends I’m with AD1.
