I was laid off as part of a big restructure VERY early in my career. I got a new job, which ended up being way better, relatively quickly and within the period I was still paid for. It still was really, really rough - I still am hurt by it years later, and it took quite a long time to come to terms that it really wasn’t a comment on my worth (in this case, it really wasn’t personal or performance based, and everyone in my intake was laid off, but I still got some reason felt I wasn’t wanted or useful or valuable).
It becomes what you make of it.
It’s only a blessing because they found a new job relatively quick
I mean if you start working 20 hours/week less and make 50% more, yes most people would think so.
But also, they were probably posting on LinkedIn when they got their internship about how great Big4Life would be.
Everybody deals with things in their own way. I'm sure at some point they felt devastated and probably scared. Now they have something new to look forward to and maybe they do feel like it helped them make a move they should have done anyway. No harm in spinning a positive story for yourself either way.
My temperament is mostly to go with the flow and grin and bear stuff, so even though I wasn't liking the trajectory of what i needed to stay in Big 4, I kept at it. Being laid off definitely sucks, but it also helped me realize that not everyone has Partner mentality and that's OK.
I was a part of recent layoffs at a Big 4 as well (and don't have a new job yet) and of course, the lack of income is devastating but it does feel like a blessing to be finally released. I wasn't going to quit on my own and would just have stayed on no matter what.
Life is good. Money is right. Professionally people give you the benefit of doubt when it comes to your competence. First rate resources. Etc.
Not devastating for me. My finances are in a great place and I believe there are a lot of ways to make money.
Big4 isn't the only game in town. Public accounting isn't the only way to make money for that matter.
Well, if you've been at a Big 4 long enough and lost your job due to layoffs and no fault of your own, it could probably be a good thing. Your resume would look impressive I would think.
