I am in private wealth mgmt, there are lots of stress that comes with the job, but I enjoy what I do. 20+yrs now in the industry, and it has been rewarding both professionally and financially.
I am in a situation similar to yours, where I would leave a lot of money on the table if I go somewhere else. I guess it really depends on where you see your career goes within this industry, and whether there will be happiness if you continue on this path. If not, start looking around, network, and see if there are other areas of interest that you might be able to pivot to.
I think I saw a comment of yours in another bowl. If not, my response there is appropriate here. I fell into substance abuse to escape the pressures associated with my previous role in investments. I struggled and overcame and thought that somehow those pressures had magically disappeared. It wasn't long after my recovery and return that I realized it was the same job with the same conditions. The main difference was that I knew how the story would end. I asked my manager to demote me to this position where I can use my finance industry skills in a lower-stress environment. I have made some budgetary adjustments, but I am much happier and secure.
How long have you been in the field? What do you find is the cause of your stress and exhaustion right now? Is it just the job, or are there other life factors that are contributing? Sorry to answer your question with more questions, but I think they're important considerations before offering advice.
this is why I did wealth management instead of asset management. It's way less stressful, you have better time management, and you still make good money. Being in asset management, I would bet you could get off to a good start, but you would definitely have a paycut at first.
It was always money and some sense of security of why I went this path. Do I hate what I do? No, but if it paid a lot less I can’t imagine I would still be doing the same thing. I like to look at it as funding the things I really do enjoy in life. But with so much time spent at work, sometimes I wonder if it evens out.
OP that is a really tough one because they say money isn't everything but with these rising prices of everything its hard not to focus on the salary cut you would be taking.
As a Sell-Side Equity Research Analyst, I am writing research papers on fundamental issues and earnings expectations for 10 to 15 companies at a time. While I don't have that spark and passion for the day-to-day research I used to, I still love the markets, investments, and finance topics in general. Our roles in investment/asset management casts a constant cognitive load on us and can cause us to lose interest and drain our energy from time to time. Its totally normal.
What has helped me is talking to clients more, either face to face or over the phone or sitting in on a client meeting with another analyst. Talking to clients has helped me remember the impact we have and how unique/valuable our expertise/knowledge is to those not familiar with our industry.
